It's important to know that #videogame sector commits to transparent and fair in-game purchases. The industry paper 👇 below is endorsed by Belgian videogame sector and explains how commercial intent behind in-game purchase, including price in real-world money, is clearly distinguished from gameplay so that it is obvious to videogame players when they are being proposed to make financial decision.

In April this year, the two European trade bodies, Video Games Europe and European Games Developer Federation (EGDF) adopted the transparent and fair purchases of in-game content position paper. These cover an updated PEGI code of conduct on purchasable in-game content, additional safeguards for players, with a focus on minors; and commitment to information campaigns and providing trusted data. ✅ Read more here: https://bit.ly/3zgQ1Rw The ability to purchase in-game content has been important to support greater consumer choice. In the last 20 years, many new platforms, genres of games, and business models have developed in response to consumer expectations for new content and experiences. We work together as an industry to ensure that players and consumers can make an informed choice about whether to purchase in-game content for themselves or for their children (and are transparent about) the cost of doing so.

Over 5 years ago, Stanislav Novokhatko and I launched GDBAY and Global Games Pitch with the mission to connect game developers, publishers and investors from all over the world. In 2020-2021, when the pandemics hit us all, our online tool let hundreds of developers pitch their games, find business opportunities and sign deals from the comfort of their own homes. In 2022, when the full-scale invasion began, our team bravely kept the platform running and events going, sometimes literally from the bomb shelters. A vital petition for the future of video games. Especially with the Live Service model becoming popular in the past couple of years, and the prompt realization in the industry that only so many games can require you to play them like a full time job leading to countless games shutting their doors, this may change the dynamics entirely. - For starters, a game being able to function offline without having to phone the servers is undeniably a good thing for the players. We get to own the games again, without them getting bricked over time - Hopefully prompts a change in design philosophy. If the games are produced with the knowledge that they will need to function beyond the server lifespan, maybe the publishers will think twice about their game format. Focus on ensuring enjoyment and longevity, over being "daily engagement simulators" - If the game is supposed to function offline after the servers are shut, maybe make it so that the game functions offline in general? I'm not always online. Neither are your servers. Let me play the game I purchased, not a temporary license to access your servers! #GaaS #VideoGames #LiveService

Now it's time for Steam to get rid of 30% commission - it worked in the early days but not now with 20k+ games launching this year - it's tough to justify it. New lawsuit Wolfire Games vs. Steam: https://lnkd.in/ehJ8BcTV Here’s some highlights as per GameDiscoverCo: "The main thrust of the argument is that Valve’s policies “prevent any publisher that sells its game on Steam… from (a) providing additional game content on another platform that it does not make available on Steam (content parity); or (b) selling a game for a lower price on another platform (price parity).” (Unclear if true, right?) Valve has argued that it does make restrictions on Steam key re-use, that’s its right since those keys are its property, and it’ll remove Steam keys if that’s shown to be legally dubious. But Wolfire claims: “Valve regularly confirmed to publishers in no uncertain terms that its [Platform Most-Favored Nation] Policy (including pricing parity specifically) applies in equal force regardless of whether Steam Keys are involved.” The evidence for this? Much of it is redacted. But looks to us like Wolfire are conflating Steam key and more general restrictions, and also saying PMFN was unwritten rules: “Microsoft employee asking ‘does Steam require price parity?’ and another responding “Yes – they absolutely do. . . . Its [sic] not formally listed in documentation in Steamworks, but always addressed in-person.”). (stating that Valve “always addressed” its PMFN Policy “in-person” with publishers).” Ah yes, unwritten rules, famously easily to prove in a court of law. The suit also goes through the platforms that have tried to compete with Valve and failed, suggesting: “Because Valve’s PMFN Policy precludes publishers from differentiating content offered on Steam and [Epic Games Store], publishers have little incentive to offer games on EGS and consumers have little incentive to use the platform.” #Valve #Commission #Marketplace #Games #Monopoly
