I have the privilege of working with the next generation of talent as the CEO of PlumThyme. Over the past year, I onboarded several bright interns, focusing on providing them with an opportunity to have meaningful “real world” work experiences. As their 3-month-long internships conclude, I sit down with them for a chat. I ask about their experiences, what they enjoyed, how the internship aligned with their expectations, and most importantly, their 'feed forward' – a concept I've embraced from my Stanford class, which focuses on constructive advice for the future, rather than just feedback on the past. These conversations are a highlight for me. They signify that we've established a foundation of trust, essential for open communication. Hearing how much the interns value their 1:1 time with the company leader and the guidance provided is incredibly rewarding. Another aspect they often highlight is the joy of collaborating with the entire team. We've established a tradition of regular team calls, where interns and senior team members alike come together not just to discuss projects but to connect on a personal level through ice-breaker games and casual chats. It's heartwarming to see how much these interactions are valued. The insights I gain from these honest conversations are invaluable. They not only shed light on the needs and preferences of our interns but also mirror what every team member, regardless of age or experience, might seek in a company culture. This journey reinforces my belief that the core of leadership is about building relationships, fostering trust, and creating an environment where every team member feels valued and heard. Solid Friday morning by Continuing our conversations and connections this morning with the Intelligent Wellhead Systems Summer Interns. Question: What career insights/advice would you give yourself starting out in your career that they can benefit from? Comment below! Today I was inspired by my friend to make a reflection about my work. I’m getting close to celebrating my 1 YEAR of internship at NOV Flexibles and thinking about these last months, I notice remarkably how much I have developed professionally, and I know that this journey has no end. We are all constantly evolving. I had already worked before, and this is not my first professional experience, although I must admit that in these 25 years, this has been the most enriching experience so far, and that’s what I would like to bring up some points about today. As an FP&A intern, what makes this experience so enriching, unlike any other professional experience I've ever had? 1- Being part of a company with the NOV culture is certainly a turning point in a professional’s life. All the networking, the multicultural environment and possibilities opened for us are life-changing. 2- Everyone around me encourages me to develop my self-confidence and professional autonomy within the company by assigning me projects and responsibilities. Also, HR cares about us both as a person (with family and special needs) and as a professional. 3- I have the privilege of receiving feedback/advice and guidance from my manager who, despite being very busy, is dedicated to developing me along with the team and succeeding in the next one. 4- Notions of teamwork are continually reinforced at NOV, and I have the privilege of having an incredible team by my side, where everyone helps each other. But this is not just a reality in my sector. Everyone has the view that we are part of a big machine. Also, we’re always being prepared with seminars about health, safety, and work improvement. 5- I have efficient supervision who is attentive to my qualities and manages my strengths in projects. I feel blessed to be among such competent professionals, hard work and successful people whom I aspired to follow their steps and grow.

In our recent episode with PR veteran Ron Culp, he shared a wealth of knowledge on what it takes to succeed in the communications industry. One key takeaway was the importance of making yourself indispensable to your company, especially early in your career. Ron shared an anecdote about a former intern who consistently went above and beyond, offering to help with tasks outside her regular duties. By the end of her internship, she had built such a strong reputation that the company was eager to hire her. Today, she's a thriving executive at the same firm. The lesson? Don't be afraid to put in the extra effort, even if it means staying late or taking on additional projects. As Ron put it, "Find ways to raise your hand." This dedication can pay off in the long run, leading to greater opportunities and career growth. Of course, this doesn't mean sacrificing work-life balance entirely. 💡Create a Healthy Multigenerational Workplace For the first time in history, workplaces are beginning to span six generations: from the octogenarians of the Silent Generation to the teenagers of Generation Alpha pursuing their first jobs and internships. Ever heard of the term self-deprecation? I want to tell you about the time I discovered its meaning. While working for a TV production company in my late 20s, the shareholders asked me, "So, what do you do?" My answer was terribly depressing! It started with, "Well, I just..." and I proceeded to downplay my role and value to the business. At the time, I had a generalist role that included IT support and office management. I had set up the first internship programme and supported the external HR consultant to the company. If mine wasn’t done, others couldn’t do their jobs well. My day-to-day role was far from insignificant. So, when the company MD said, "What a self-deprecating response, Karabo," I realised how poorly I was portraying myself to the world. My skills and value were not being undermined by anyone but myself. Many of us do this day in and day out and wonder why we never advance in our careers. There's a difference between humility and self-deprecation. Unlike humility, which conveys quiet self-respect, self-deprecation devalues a person and the work they do. Comedians do it for laughs, but around the boardroom table, we do it hoping to be valued by others, which often does not happen. As we start the second half of 2024 remember to believe and invest in your potential! 💯 #leadwell #potential
