Electricians and Electrical Engineers invest a great deal into their trade, their vans, tools, and test equipment, and their initial and ongoing training, keeping current with all the regulations and laws. For example, the Institution of Engineering and Technology. IET BS7671:2018 18th Edition. Yet we see people able to buy consumer units and fit them without qualifications, with 100 Amp supples (Dangerous to all)  even advertising and fitting EV car chargers in homes across the country without qualifications. We have to take electrical safety seriously. Household Electrical Safety Faulty electrical equipment and sockets cause about 70 deaths and 350,000 injuries annually in UK homes. This statistic emphasises the importance of following electrical safety guidelines to prevent these incidents. Individuals must practice safety measures to avoid accidents with multiple electrical components and devices in an average home (Peabody). Electrical incidents are also a significant contributor to house fires. Electricity is responsible for over 20,000 accidental fires in homes annually. Key culprits include cooking appliances, laundry machines, portable heaters, and televisions, responsible for approximately 12,000 fires and 3,000 electrical injuries yearly. Therefore, investing in fireproof products and adhering to safety guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of devastating incidents( Electrical Safety First). Even in low-risk office spaces, safeguarding employees from electrical incidents is essential. We shared our vision that every high street in the UK should have a space where people can bring in broken electronics and appliances to be fixed for free, while gaining the skills they need to give it a go themselves in the future. Since then, Fixing Factories have become something tangible, popular and effective. In 2022 we teamed up with The Restart Project to launch our Camden and Brent pilot Fixing Factories, and the past couple of years have seen us working together to trial and test this model for tackling e-waste. The government's public attitudes tracker on green issues and low-carbon choices is always a treasure trove of data. Our colleague Lauren Orso has done some excellent analysis of the latest insight on the public’s awareness, understanding and acceptance of green heating. Over the last year, awareness of heat pumps has increased but stated likelihood to install one has stayed roughly the same. And older age groups are more sceptical - while also being the group most likely to be homeowners and have the means to change their heating systems, so this is a challenge for the sector.
