Never thought about the process: how do you check a child’s mental health? Same as for adults, you ask them. But what is difficult for adults is even trickier for children. The article below is a great spotlight of this challenge. It points out that children might not want to disclose sensitive issues in front of their parents. Depending on age, different involvement can be seen but the traditional process does not reflect that challenge. So #digitalhealth can enable better care for pediatricians through pre-appointment data collection and flagging of risks. “With rising numbers of pediatric mental health emergencies, catching cases early is key. Improving and enabling screening makes it more likely that more children will be referred to the care they need.”

As an OB/GYN, I've witnessed countless new mothers struggle silently with postpartum mental health issues. Their eyes tell a story their lips can't speak - one of overwhelming anxiety, crushing self-doubt, and a deep sense of isolation. It's heart-wrenching to see these women, who should be basking in the joy of new motherhood instead of drowning in a sea of unexpected emotions. We in the medical community must do better. Mental health support isn't a luxury—it's a crucial part of postpartum care.   A simple "How are you coping?" can be the key to unlocking a flood of relief for a struggling mother. To my colleagues: Let's champion comprehensive mental health screenings and support systems for new families. To new mothers: Your feelings are valid, and help is available. You're not alone in this journey. The countdown to the first day of school has begun. However, the start of the school year can bring physical, mental, and emotional challenges for your child. Consider these suggestions to help keep kids healthy as they return to school:   ✅ Let them play outside: Encourage outdoor activities. Children between 6 and 17 years old should get at least an hour of moderate to vigorous activity every day. Aerobic and muscle strengthening exercises can help improve both emotional and physical well-being.   ✅ Keep them home if they’re sick: Fevers of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, vomiting, and diarrhea could be symptoms of a contagious illness. Consult with your child’s pediatrician without delay.  ✅ Adjust their sleep schedule: A week or two before the school year begins, implement earlier bedtimes and morning wake ups.  ✅ Be ready to address mental health issues: Monitor children’s TV viewing and social media content. Set screen time limits. Remember to be a reassuring role model. Children look up to you and will mimic your emotional behavior.  “The start of the school year is an exciting time for kids and families,” said Dr. Melanie Ribbeck, a pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “However, those changes in routine may affect physical and psychological health.
