On Memorial Day, we recognize the fallen heroes who bravely gave their lives for our country. In honor of this Memorial Day and Military Appreciation Month, we treated our very own CarVets, a Military Veterans Community at Carvana, to Track Laps for Charity. Before hitting tracks for a good cause, they received a surprise message from Jimmie Johnson !

Honoring Our Heroes: A Social Story for Memorial Day What is Memorial Day? It's a special day in the United States (on the last Monday of May) to remember all the brave men and women who served in the military. These are people who wear uniforms and protect our country. Why do we remember them? ️ Some of these heroes fought in battles to keep us safe, and some might not be here anymore because they died protecting our freedom. How do we celebrate? We visit cemeteries (special places where people are buried) to place flowers on their graves. We might see parades with flags and people in uniforms. (Flags represent America!) What can you do? Help hang a flag! Draw pictures to thank veterans! In recent years, there have been a number of new drugs approved for #ALS, and Muscular Dystrophy Association funding has been involved either directly or indirectly in most of those. One example is QALSODY® (tofersen), which is a drug for a genetic form of ALS, and MDA funded the first clinical trial for the predecessor to that drug. One of the key areas of #ALSresearch that we think is very important is the ability to diagnose people earlier. Most people have symptoms of ALS for a year to six months before they're actually diagnosed, so if we could back up that time and start drugs and clinical trials earlier, we feel like that would have a great impact across different types of therapies in ALS. #ALSawarenessMonth #EndALSwithMDA

This post is essential reading. NZ has been on a pathway of increasing division for some years, and it is collective weakness. Defence veterans show NZ the way. Integration, dialogue, learning from history and setting a joint culture pathway to the future is essential. Do we want to continue the pathway we are on and reach the terrible outcomes that Bosnia, Germany, and Rewanda did in the past? OR shall we act on the Defence example. A society that stands together is a strong society. Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi (With your food basket and my food basket the people will thrive)
"Having spent many years in the military, many of my fellow soldiers were Pākehā, but we did not look at each other as Māori or Pākehā, just fellow soldiers/mates." This quote illustrates the true nature of the unity experienced by New Zealand veterans. In the NZDF, the bond between soldiers transcends racial and cultural differences. We stood/stand/will stand and fight together as one, supporting and protecting each other, as brothers and sisters. In this, there is a salutary lesson for our current and future society. In New Zealand today, where societal divisions seem more prominent than ever due to the agenda driven narratives of a self serving minority on both sides, much can be learnt from the solidarity displayed by our veterans. Their example demonstrates that racial unity and mutual respect are eminently achievable, especially amidst adversity. Your simple presence shows support and respect for these heroes. 🇺🇸 Donate to a veteran organization that provides services and support to veterans, such as the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and The American Legion. It doesn’t need to be a tremendous amount. It all adds up! 🇺🇸 Volunteer Your Time at a veteran hospital, care facility, or local event. Even a small amount of time makes a big difference. Don’t feel like this has to be a huge time commitment! 🇺🇸 Reach out to a veteran today if you happen to know one personally. A simple call or message to “check in” and express your gratitude means a lot to them. This can be a really short call. Don’t let the potential time commitment overwhelm you. 🇺🇸 Support and/or patronize a veteran-owned businesses. This helps them thrive in their post-service careers. 🇺🇸 Quickly educate yourself today on the history and significance of Memorial Day and share this knowledge with someone else to foster an appreciation of this holiday weekend. 🇺🇸 Advocate for veteran issues by using your voice toward policies and initiatives that benefit veterans, whether it’s through social media, writing your legislator, or participating in an advocacy group. 🇺🇸 Fly the flag at your home or business to honor those who have served and sacrificed. You can still do this today!

💥 Memorial Day means “fun”, “long weekend”, “beach or pool”, “official start of summer”, etc. Right? I learned to enjoy this weekend with little appreciation or passing thought of why we have it in the first place. Maybe like you? 🇺🇸 As a former military flight surgeon and a tireless advocate for our veterans, this weekend holds a lot more meaning for me today. The freedoms we enjoy are never far from my mind, made possible only by the selfless acts of the fallen heroes we are honoring. As is said, freedom is not – and will never be – free. 👿 There are too many dark forces in the world – think Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, etc – that would take great joy in seeing our country fall to its knees. Strange, right? But true. We can never lose sight of this reality. 🙏 As we honor our fallen heroes this weekend, I ask that you support our living heroes, namely our military veterans and their families. Whether through volunteering, donating, or offering a helping hand or listening ear, your support will make a big difference. 🤝 I guarantee it.
