🍃 2024 Alabama PALS "Don’t Drop It On Alabama" Statewide Spring Cleanup 🍃 This April 2024, Alabama embarks on a transformative journey with the "Don’t Drop It On Alabama" Statewide Spring Cleanup. Throughout the entire month, we are calling on cities, counties, schools, neighborhoods, and volunteer groups to unite for a monumental cleanup effort across every county in our state. With all supplies and materials furnished, we are fully equipped to tackle the challenges of litter and illegal dumping head-on, improving our community health, environmental sustainability, and even our city budgets. Our recent blog post sheds light on the vast impacts of litter on our communities. The effect of imposed tree planting! Some will say this is just mindless vandalism when young trees are planted in Public Open Space. However I see mindful removal. When people are disconnected from each other and disconnected from the local authority, guess what, things like tree planting on public open space will become hated, disliked and a waste of resources. It is an imposed planting of wasted money that could better serve the community such as pot hole filling etc. Have you heard that one? So what needs to be done? Dialogue! Leaflet drops. Talking to the people who will back onto these trees. Discussion with community. And if a community doesn’t exist then don’t plant the trees there until it does. Otherwise it ABSOLUTELY IS a waste of Council resources, time and money. What can be done then? Well if tree planting is needed, which we know it is, then this requires community consultation and getting people together to plant them and look after them. Many don’t realise what a tree can do for them. Many see them as causing them distress, shade, leaves to clear up etc. Perhaps they would suggest a better location that isn’t the rear of their gardens. Perhaps then people will nurture them, care for them, water them and create public outcry if they become damaged or vandalised. I never heard a public outcry about these trees being vandalised. Give trees value in a community and they will shout to the hills when they are destroyed by mindless vandalism. They will not be mindfully removed. So what can be done? Find the communities that want them, will help plant them, nurture them and sell the dream. These are the people to work with and others will follow in their footsteps. Three months ago, we introduced a front page LA Times article on an unfolding crisis in the San Gabriel Mountains. A problem compounded over several decades, turned a national monument into a national landfill seemingly overnight. However the story of trash and related blight was not new to those who frequently visit the backdrop of Los Angeles. Since the 1970s, has excessive trash plagued the Angeles National Forest. The amount of people visiting the national forest and monument are beyond carrying capacity (4.59 million in 2021). This excessive visitation, made worse by inadequate funds, staffing shortages, insufficient law enforcement, and a lack of open/green space within our communities contributed to the worst conditions the San Gabriel Mountains have ever experienced. Today we are advocating for these long-standing issues to be addressed in conjunction with the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Expansion proposal. We will not support a "name only designation" that fails to address these major problems. We must ensure our conservation efforts are sustainable and provide a balance with preservation. A work with nature approach is necessary to ensure a place with irreplaceable value is not last to time and blight.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) is an organization with the mission “to engage individuals to take greater responsibility in reducing waste and eliminating litter through #action and #education”. To accomplish this, KBB organizes #cleanups on beaches, railway trails, playgrounds, etc. all across Bermuda. You can help them accomplish the “action” part of their mission by signing up to join the monthly cleanups. Or, as a member of the community or community organization, you can host a cleanup. Lastly, organizations can #adoptaspot, in which they become responsible for hosting routine cleanups for that area. Hiscox Re & ILS recently adopted a part of the trail that runs through Khyber Pass. I had the pleasure of joining the Green Team for one of their routine cleanups. Participating in this cleanup put into perspective that in places where there aren't many, if any, #trash cans people will #litter. Also, if you leave it up to people to discard their big appliances, they will not go through the appropriate channels to do so. It seems that they believe once it is off their property it is no longer their responsibility. Completely forgetting it makes the area distasteful. Remember that every little action compounds whether it's good or bad. Contribute to the #positiveimpact with small positive actions. 

Ashington Town Council and Northumberland County Council are reviewing their Enhanced Neighbourhood Services Partnership agreement which expires in March 2024. The goal is to make ongoing improvements to keep Ashington's streets clean, address littering and fly tipping, and enhance the town's appearance. Key discussion points include: 🤝 Adjusting street sweeping and cleansing schedules to better meet needs and free up resources for other beautification tasks like weed control and hedge trimming. 🤝 Finding ways to reduce waste and fly tipping so that funds can support proactive cleaning and greening efforts. Over 1,000 fly tipping incidents needed clean-up in Ashington from April to September. 🤝 Promoting civic pride and collaborating to make Ashington an attractive, welcoming town. Residents can report fly tipping via the NCC Fix My Street app and get involved in community litter picks. 🤝Exploring options to improve grass cutting and grounds maintenance to enhance the look of public spaces, aligned with upcoming biodiversity and service standard changes across Northumberland. The focus is to ensure resources go towards activities that will visibly improve Ashington's environment. Continued partnership between the councils and community participation are key to taking proactive steps.
