I frequently get asked “should I get a PhD?” The answer is of course different for everyone. But one thing is for sure - the depth, quality, and rigor of the research *process* at an R1 institution is profound. These days higher ed gets a lot of pushback. What’s the ROI of a degree? Why is this system so exclusive? Isn’t this just another form of economic stratification? The critiques are necessary. But so is higher ed’s rigor. I hope more orgs will take cues from academia and invest deep focus into research. It seems costly up front but results in higher quality outputs from change management to strategy to productivity to innovation. #proudbruin #bruin #highered #socialscience #orgdev #research #orgdevelopment

"As a first-generation student, her parents had little advice to offer, and her university didn’t provide any personalized academic advising." Great story of the Resilience of First-Gen Warriors. It really is a complicated process to navigate on your own as a young adult without any support. It can be so overwhelming, students can get lost and discouraged to finish the process. There is so much an institution can offer these days to help students in the process. Is your institution doing everything it can to help these First-Gen Warriors?

WANTED: A REAL CONSUMER GUIDE TO COLLEGE by Steven Hayward Blog excerpts: "It’s clearly good news that the DEI jackboots are getting the boot in a lot of places, and that Ivy League presidents are being shown the door for their moral turpitude. But as everyone knows, these improvements are marginal, as the inmates (faculty and administrators alike) are still fully in charge of the asylum." "I’ve long had a beef with the college rankings from U.S. News and World Report, The Princeton Review, Forbes, etc. They are really just reflections of general reputation, and do you really need U.S. News to know that Harvard has a reputation as an elite school? These guides offer no guidance at all for students choosing classes, and selecting which professors to seek out, and which to avoid." "It would be a great service to humanity if there was some kind of service that emulated the way FIRE ranks colleges for their protection of free expression. FIRE gives three levels of evaluation along with their overall rankings: Green, Yellow, and Red, with a Red rating meaning that a college is very poor in protection free speech. (And Harvard finished last in the nation in FIRE’s last rankings.)"

Helping higher education build communities to scale support and improve student outcomes | Co-founder and CEO at InScribe |
Incredible session today with Russell Lowery-Hart, Pascale Charlot, and Joshua Wyner about the critical work community colleges are doing in higher education. Particularly inspired to think about how we can better support transfer students coming from high school or going on to 4 year institutions. Today - roughly 80% of community college students want to go on to get a BA. Only 16% actually do. How can we change this statistic?
