I've really found myself re-reading and enjoying "Education for Liberation: The Politics of Promise and Reform Inside and Beyond America’s Prisons," edited by G. Robingson and Elizbeth English Smith. This book compiles chapters written by individuals on the right and the left of the political spectrum, and within and outside the fields of prison education and reentry that address this need for reform. The Allan Government faces a choice with the Youth Justice Bill: continue ratcheting up a ‘tough on crime’ political agenda which has failed children and the community, or support evidence-based alternatives which work and ensure that every child grows up with their family and community. Increasing police powers and pipelining more children into youth prisons is never the answer. The answer is always building up the community supports needed to help children avoid contact with - and the harms caused by - the criminal legal system in the first place.

🔗 Highlighting the Plight of Women Prisoners: A Call for Human Rights and Dignity 🔗 In my research and legal work, I've witnessed the profound challenges faced by women prisoners, marked by unique vulnerabilities that demand urgent attention. Women often experience gender-based violence, lack access to healthcare, and endure separation from their children, impacting familial bonds and mental health. The legal and social systems often overlook the gender-specific needs of women offenders, resulting in unjust outcomes. Advocating for policies that recognize these disparities is crucial to ensuring dignity and respect for women prisoners. Dedicated to human rights and constitutional law, advocating for legal reforms to create a more just penal system is essential. I am sharing this impactful article from Human Rights Watch that sheds light on a heartbreaking reality: the devastating impact of incarcerating mothers in the U.S. Often, these women are separated from their families for minor offenses or while still awaiting trial, causing a series of harmful consequences for both them and their children. The report highlights how these separations can cause lasting damage to families, from the loss of child custody to the breakdown of family bonds and the difficulty of maintaining financial stability. It is crucial to address these systemic issues and seek solutions that prioritize family unity and comprehensive support for these women and their children. It is estimated that 80 percent of incarcerated women in the United States are mothers of minor children and are more likely to be the primary caregivers for their children. When mothers are in prison, their children are more likely to end up in foster care. Jail stays can turn into long-term family separations as mothers struggle to overcome obstacles to regain custody of their children. Women constitute the fastest-growing correctional population in the country. Additionally, they face more difficulties in paying bail than men due to higher levels of poverty and the gender pay gap. The criminal justice system needs to be reformed to ensure these cycles of separation and suffering are not perpetuated.
