#Day2
👋 Hello, LinkedIn family!
I hope you all are doing well and staying safe in this digital age. Today, I wanted to share some insights I gained from Day 2 of the cybersecurity course I'm taking.
🎯 Mission 1.2: "The Usual Suspects" covers the importance of cybersecurity, the people behind cyber-attacks, and some real-life case studies. I learned some alarming statistics on the current state of cybersecurity, such as:
- 💰 Cybercrime is expected to cost the world $10.5 trillion annually by 2025.
- 🙍 95% of cybersecurity breaches are due to human error.
- 📆 The average time to identify and contain a breach is 280 days.
These numbers demonstrate the significance of adopting good cybersecurity practices for individuals and organizations alike. Such practices include:
- 🔒 Protecting sensitive information from theft and unauthorized access
- 🏭 Maintaining business continuity and safeguarding critical infrastructure
- 💸 Reducing financial losses associated with cybercrime
This sector also taught me about the different types of people or groups behind cyber-attacks, which can be categorized into insiders and outsiders.
- 👥 Insiders have legitimate access to an organization's systems, such as end-users or disgruntled employees.
- 🌐 Outsiders are those without authorized access, such as organized criminals, hacktivists, state-sponsored actors, or amateur hackers.
I found the case studies very interesting and informative, as they showed how these attackers operate and their motives. For example, I learned about:
- 📧 Mailchimp, a marketing platform that suffered a phishing attack that compromised the accounts of some of its customers.
- 🕵️♂️ Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor who leaked classified documents to the media, exposing the agency's surveillance programs.
- 💔 Ashley Madison, a dating website for married people was hacked by a group called The Impact Team, who exposed the personal data of millions of users.
These cases illustrate the diverse and complex nature of cyber threats and the need for constant vigilance and awareness. They also highlight cybersecurity's ethical and legal implications and the challenges of balancing security and privacy.
I'm enjoying this course and looking forward to learning more about cybersecurity. I think it's a fascinating and relevant topic, especially in today's world, where technology is ubiquitous and interconnected. I'm grateful for this opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills in this field.
