Incredible achievement by Environmental Defense Fund on the successful launch of MethaneSAT 🛰   This milestone tackles one of the most impactful yet addressable issues in decarbonisation: curbing methane emissions. Per the IEA, methane emissions intensity from oil and gas operations need to drop by over 70% by 2030. Nearly all mitigation measures cost under $20/tCO2e equivalent (with the majority much cheaper), making methane reduction one of the most cost-effective strategies for significantly lowering global GHG emissions. Transparency and monitoring through satellite detection is a crucial piece of the puzzle. This new era of #emissions tracking and #publicdatasharing is remarkable and full of #risks and #opportunities as we explore and implement #netzero pathways.

MethaneSAT is in orbit! The satellite will orbit Earth 15x each day and that data will be available for free to the public. The goal is to enable governments and companies to find, assess, and fix methane leaks faster than ever before. And that's a big deal because one molecule of methane traps about 30x more heat than one molecule of carbon dioxide. Since this data is free and open, the world will know who is keeping their promises to reduce methane emissions.

Anybody can access it. This is not going to be able to see pinhole leaks in some compressor instrumentation tubing, unless you have a bunch of them but a compressor seal leak, probably. And the software to enhance the images will get better and better. Start looking for "Stupid Emissions". Things that could draw attention to your facilities. At Angus Measurement Services, LP Special Services Group we can help you controlling emissions from your aboveground storage tanks. From monthly inspections of the tanks, cleaning the gauge hatch gaskets to annual replacement of these gaskets. The cost of this is small in relation to the fines and enhancements that can be brought down. In addition, if you are looking at having a closed tank system, we can offer consultation on what needs to be done to the existing tank to be sure it is capable of handling the higher pressure. Raising the tank operating pressure from 4 ounces to 8 ounces could lower the emissions from the tank. But the tank has to be capable of safely operating at this higher pressure.
