Film Screening of Interest: LYD Join SFU's Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies for a screening of LYD, “A story of a city that once connected Palestine to the world – what it once was, what it is now, and what it could have become.” This screening will be followed by a discussion with Sarah Shamash, Dana Qaddah, and Sobhi Zobaidi, moderated by Adel Iskandar. "This feature-length, sci-fi documentary shares multiple pasts, presents, and futures of the city of Lyd in Palestine/Israel. From the perspective of the city herself, voiced by Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi, the viewer is guided through the lifespan of a five-thousand-year-old city and its residents. Lyd was once a thriving Palestinian city with a rich history. In 636AD, It was even considered the first capital of Palestine. When the State of Israel was founded in 1948, Lyd became an Israeli city, and in the process, hundreds of Lyd’s Palestinian residents were massacred by Israeli forces, and most of the city’s 50,000 Palestinian residents were exiled. Today, the city has a Jewish Israeli majority and a Palestinian minority and is disinvested and divided by racism and violence. For Palestinians, Lyd’s story is a painful and tragic fall from grace, which is why our film dares to ask the question: what would the city be like had the Israeli occupation of Lyd never happened?" If there's a documentary I recommend you watch to help understand this conflict and the history it's this one

“In the late 1990s, Israeli graduate student Teddy Katz researched a large-scale Israeli massacre that had allegedly occurred in the Palestinian village of Tantura in 1948. His work later came under attack and his reputation ruined, but 140 hours of audio testimonies remain. “Director Alon Schwarz revisits former Israeli soldiers of the Alexandroni Brigade and confronts them with Teddy's recorded audiotape interviews as well as visiting former Palestinian residents of Tantura in an effort to re-examine what happened in the village and explore why ‘The Nakba’ is taboo in Israeli society. “The now elderly ex-soldiers recall their unsettling acts while disquietly pausing at points they either don't want to remember or won't speak of. Audio from Katz's 20-year-old interviews cuts through the silence of self-preservation and exposes ways in which power, silencing, and protected narratives can sculpt history. “The film provides a rare look at Israeli society's first-generation and how the country's founding myth has shaped reality for generations. The film brings never before seen archival footage from 1948 alongside intimate interviews with ex-Israeli soldiers, Palestinian residents, and historians.”

Being critical about his government doesn't make young Israeli journalist "Yuval Abraham" an Anti-semitic. He has publically said he faces death threats following the acceptance speech he gave for a documentary he directed with Palestinian journalist "Basel al Adraa" exposing Israel's illegal land theft in Masafer Yatta, occupied West Bank. We must support, applaud these young activists who emphasize on the importance of co-existence between the Israelis & Palestinans during these uncertain times. "No Other Land" is a 2024 documentary film directed by Basel Adra, Yuval Abraham, Hamdan Ballal and Rachel Szor in their directorial debut. The film was made by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four activists as an act of resistance on the path to justice during the ongoing war in the region. A co-production between Palestine and Norway, the film was selected for the Panorama section at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on 16 February 2024, winning the 'Panorama Audience' Award for Best Documentary Film, and the "Berlinale Documentary Film Award". Here is an example of three critical need for the documentary witness and the preservation of that documentary witness in archives and digital archives for generations to come. What is critical in Africa is that, as Brecht Declercq, President of FIAT/IFTA points out, the documentation of the birth of postcolonial nation states is documented on video carriers that is mostly not digitised and is fast approaching the point where it cannot be digitised either due to its condition or due to redundancy of the technology itself.

This is the little-known story of how #cinema was used to counter the narrative of a #colonial power. . 🔗On #Algeria’s Independence Day, tap the link in @AJWitness’s bio to watch the @dissimila.rs’s Cine-Guerill
