MY JOURNEY FROM LOVING CIVIL ENGINEERING TO LIVING IT… I always loved civil engineering. Ever since I was a kid, I was fascinated by how structures and buildings were made. I wanted to be part of that magic, to shape the world with my own hand But it wasn't easy. The job market was tough, and many people advised me to switch to IT for more money and security. They said civil engineering was too risky, too hard, too boring. I didn't listen, I knew civil engineering was my passion, my purpose. I wanted to be a silent hero, creating the foundations of our civilization. I wanted to leave a mark on the world, not just on a screen. So I worked hard. I studied, sacrificed, relocated, and endured. I faced challenges and overcame health issues. But I also made friends, learned skills, and gained experience. And I don't regret it. Civil engineering has given me so much joy, satisfaction, and pride. I love seeing my creations rise from the ground, knowing I made a difference. I love being part of a community of passionate professionals, who share my vision and values. I'm sharing my story with you. To inspire you to follow your passion, whatever it may be. To show you that it's possible to overcome obstacles and achieve your goals. To remind you that it's not just about the money, it's about the meaning Civil engineering is more than a job, it's a lifestyle. It's not just about the buildings, it's about the legacy. "I pity guys studying a civil engineering degree." Was a concern from a certain student studying a diploma in Building and construction. He was concerned how the field was so broad for guys pursuing bachelors degree in Engineering that they would be lost after graduation. How do they navigate the field and how do they gain the required skill was His concern?? I brushed it off but I felt abit of pain because I exactly knew what he meant. When I graduated from Engineering school Honestly I did not know what I would do or what caliber of Engineer I would become. Was I a wash Eng, a highway Eng,a structural Eng, a dam engineer, a bridge Eng or a traffic Eng...... The list was endless we have very many variations to the civil engineering degree. I get why we are just labelled as graduate engineers. We cannot fit anywhere. Abit funny right. And no one wants to hire a broad spectrum civil Engineer. The market is looking for a specific skill from the Civil engineer. The first thing every engineer must get when they graduate Engineering school is not a certificate but its an identity. Actually its after gaining admission to engineering school. What are you?? And you are not just a civil engineer or an 'A' student. You are a solution to the engineering world. Can you sort out an organizations hiring need?? Why should an organization hire you?? Can the community depend on your skills?? you are not limited to your certificate "This is a talk for another day" You need practical skills that are sorting problems in the market place and within your community. BTW This is a Dear Graduate Engineer piece. This my motivation factor on Project Centric Training Its about impacting skills that build an identity. At the same time defining the modern Engineer. Studied civil engineering but never built bridges or skyscrapers. And I think that's perfectly fine. Why? Because education is more than just training for a job. In those engineering classes... I learned to solve problems. I learned to think critically. Some of my peers are now great engineers. I admire and respect them.
