1. Plan ahead One of the key skills of a successful merchandiser is planning. You need to plan your tasks, your budget, your inventory, your displays, and your communication with your clients. Planning can help you avoid last-minute surprises, delays, and errors. It can also help you set realistic goals, prioritize your activities, and track your progress. Use a calendar, a planner, or a digital tool to organize your schedule and plan your projects in advance. Make sure you include some buffer time for unexpected changes or emergencies. 2. Set boundaries Another important skill of a self-employed merchandiser is setting boundaries. You need to set boundaries with your clients, your colleagues, and yourself. You need to communicate clearly what you can and cannot do, what you expect and what you offer, and when you are available and when you are not. Setting boundaries can help you avoid overcommitting, underdelivering, and compromising your quality. It can also help you respect your own needs, preferences, and values. Use a contract, a proposal, or a verbal agreement to establish your boundaries and stick to them. #merchandising #rmg #learn #merchandiser

hybrid roles as retail execution data-driven performance & potential base strategic plan consultancy & project manager - Consumer Package Good
The qualities crucial for a merchandiser’s success in a dynamic retail environment start from your bed every morning. Developing the habit of making your bed every morning aligns closely with the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle in the role of a merchandiser. Here's how: Planning starts with a simple task like making your bed, establishing a routine and a sense of order, much like planning merchandising strategies for stores. It’s about setting up a clear, achievable objective. Next, you Do—taking action by executing plans. Making the bed is a small, yet productive action, just like setting up displays or managing inventory. Then, you Check—reviewing results. When you see the bed neatly made, it mirrors how merchandisers review sales data or in-store performance to evaluate success. Finally, you Act—adjusting for improvement. If your bed isn’t as neat as you'd like, you will improve next time. Similarly, a merchandiser refines their approach based on data and feedback. This habit demonstrates discipline, attention to detail, and continuous improvement which soft skills are required in the post pandemic era of merchandiser ecosystem.

Knitwear Merchandiser (Expertise: Macy's, NEXT, LPP, ESPRIT, JUST JEANS, JAYJAYS, LOJAS RIACHUELO, FRANCHETTI, FASHION TRADE, SUZY'S INC, )
As a merchandiser, I do believe that proactivity can make our work more pleasurable and helps reaching the objective easier. Taking the initiative, predicting customer demands, and streamlining procedures and results are all components of proactive merchandising. I am sharing some pointers to help our merchandise tasks more proactively: >>We have to make sure the we and our team have specific, attainable goals. We can use this to measure our development and concentrate on the things that are most essential. >> We should ask supervisors, coworkers, and customers for their opinions. This will help us identify our areas of improvement and learn from our mistakes >> We should observe the most recent developments and trends in our sector. By doing this, we may maintain our competitive edge and provide unique and intriguing goods and services to the customers. >> We have to take accountability for our deeds and outcomes. This will encourage us to overcome obstacles and accomplish our goals by helping us establish credibility and trust. #HAPPYMERCHANDISING #PROACTIVITY #ACCOUNTABLITY

Learning through micro-PDCA involves applying the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) protocol on a smaller scale to minimize the impact of errors in new projects, unfamiliar areas, or high competitive channel environments. By conducting pilot tests in limited scenarios, we reduce risks while gathering valuable insights for larger-scale implementation. This method is especially useful in dynamic sales channels or new territories. Testing in the most complex or least understood areas allows us to learn from various factors, ultimately reducing the likelihood of errors and improving overall performance.

An ode to the Merchandisers... This meme is something I share with my current wonderful merchandising colleague on a regular basis (Carolyn Pearse loves a good meme), and I think it describes how I feel about the magical spreadsheets she comes up with pretty well! I don't think many people are really aware of Merchandising as a career path in education. Indeed many of the best Merchandisers I know didn't set out looking for it as a career path - Football, Economics and even very skilled betting come to mind! What they do all share is an unassailable sense of logic, a sixth sense for numbers, and expert level excel skills. The excel skills are actually insane, formulas that are lines and lines long...I once learned how to do a pivot table and I was very pleased with myself 😂. The relationship between Buying and Merchandising is symbiotic - one cannot exist without the other. I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed working with every single merchandiser I have been lucky enough to be paired with. Going through WSSIs together, running through trade reactions and getting incredibly excited when things go well, generating OTB and filling it with exciting new products, and managing stocks when things go a bit pear shaped. And my personal favourite, having a good old disagreement about something, but coming out with a good solution at the end and still friends! And on that note, some of my closest friends and favourite people are Merchandisers past and present. Those hours locked in together range building, strategy writing and idea generating are great bonding time, and I have gotten to work with the best! Merchandisers tend to be viewed as risk averse and not creative, but that hasn't been my experience at all - they are dynamic, strategic, straightforward and have the numbers to back it up! So here's to the Merchandisers - I have literally no idea what I would do without you ❤️
