ServiceNow recently faced a significant network outage that could have had widespread repercussions across its customer base. Using Catchpoint’s Internet Performance Monitoring (IPM) tools, we dissected the incident and found: 🔹 CAUSE: Connectivity issues with an upstream provider, Zayo (AS 6461). 🔹 IMPACT: Widespread disruption to ServiceNow's core services and client integrations. 🔹 RESPONSE: Proactive BGP route changes by ServiceNow helped mitigate further damage. 🔹 LESSONS: This incident underscores the importance of robust monitoring, proactive incident management, and accountability across the Internet stack. Fact: No one likes traffic congestion. Thanks to navigation apps on our phones and cars, we can see traffic updates that help us avoid busy roads during rush hour and reach our destinations faster. The same logic applies to content delivered over the Internet. Congestion on the web happens when data packets flood the network, causing delays and packet loss. ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) introduces a more sophisticated approach to managing network congestion. It enables devices to communicate about network congestion without losing packets, as long as components in the path support ECN and the network infrastructure is compatible.
