In South Africa only 80 % of 10 year olds can not read for meaning. The challenges start as early as Pre School (Early Childhood Development) with unequipped day care centres, lack of resources, and then this continues into school. One tutor wrote to me that her biggest challenge supporting school learners is that many can not read. Lets try reduce this statistic, we can not wait 86 years for children to read. That is why we at Sawabona Africa support organisations seeking to change this statistic. Every year, the Flight Centre Foundation donates to 5 deserving charities through our ‘Giving Grants’ program. These charities are voted for by our people, hand selected from a long list of many other deserving applicants. As each of our Giving Grants winners are doing incredible work, we want to spotlight each of them over the next few weeks to raise awareness on how they’re making an incredible change to people’s lives and within our community.  Today, we're putting the spotlight on Southern Cross Kids' Camps.  ❤ Who? Southern Cross Kids' Camps ❤ What? This wonderful organisation runs 5-day camps every year, specifically designed to interrupt the trauma-abuse-neglect cycle that can occur within primary school aged children. These camps create a safe space where children can foster hope again, as well as meet new friends and make positive memories they can reflect on for years to come.  ❤ When? Southern Cross Kids Camps happen once a year and they go for a duration of 5 days. Did you know that a staggering number of youth with disabilities in Africa are currently not receiving an education? This is often due to the lack of necessary resources and inclusive education systems. Inaccessible infrastructure and a shortage of training among educators pose significant barriers to the inclusion of these young people, leaving them on the sidelines of the educational journey that should rightfully be theirs. While the scale of this issue may seem insurmountable, we at the Osei-Kusi Foundation (OKF) firmly believe in the power of individual impact. We understand that we may not be able to reach every student in this number, but we are resolutely committed to changing the lives of brilliant but vulnerable youth in Africa one young student at a time. Enabling every child and young person to gain an education is of the upmost importance to us, which is why we're pleased to highlight that this month marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE). The GCE was so significant because in Dakar, Senegal, in 1999, an international coalition of non-governmental organizations began working to promote children's and adult education through research and advocacy with a unified voice. 25 years on and the message has never been more relevant, as UNESCO reported in 2023 that 250 million children remain out of school and 773 million adults around the world, mostly women, still lack basic literacy skills. The existing challenges of gender inequity, discrimination, quality of education, and decreasing education financing are further compounded by the multiple crises that countries are grappling with. We are setting up a new education centre!! Help set up an Education Centre for 80 kids in a small village in Yavatmal district. In many villages, countless underprivileged children lack access to quality education. This can trap them in cycles of poverty, limiting their opportunities and potential.
