“When you use the word innovative, you don't usually think about energy tariffs & rate design. You don't think about land use & zoning. But New York has created this framework that you can rethink at the ground floor...We went from bootstrapping entrepreneurs with an idea to now having raised over $400 million for the types of solutions that we dreamed up (in that space) & then could execute.” - Adam Cohen, Chief Technical Officer & Co-Founder of NineDot Energy Cohen says NineDot chose to move to NYC because of the beneficial policy frameworks & the ability to scale a business there. The company built NYC's first vehicle-to-grid project in Red Hook, Brooklyn, transforming electric vehicles into grid resources - a testament to NineDot's innovation as well as NYC's supportive environment for pioneering work. My work here is done…. After an incredible 7-year journey, I am sad to say that I am departing GRIDSERVE. During this time I’ve witnessed remarkable growth – from a mere 7 employees to a thriving team of over 300, transitioning from a handful of sustainable energy projects to becoming one of the largest EV charging companies in the country, building a complete sun-to-wheel sustainable infrastructure ecosystem (solar to battery to EV charging to EV leasing). We have pushed boundaries, experimented, grown, evolved - and raised close to a billion pounds for the business, from Series A capital to private equity and infrastructure equity investments, alongside project finance and infrastructure debt. That this includes funding for new, “unfinanceable” innovations such as the UK’s first subsidy-free solar projects, battery storage and EV charging infrastructure, is particularly satisfying. I’ve now traversed both sides of the financial landscape – as an investment banker for most of my career, with spells in private equity and investment management, and as a borrower/investee at GRIDSERVE. It therefore feels like a good time to return to the financial sector, where I can leverage my wealth of knowledge and experience to support other growing companies, assisting them in securing funding and navigating their own financial journeys. My focus will remain on sustainability, climate change and impact. As always, any conversations around these critical areas are welcome. #sustainableinvestment #renewableenergy #sustainableinfrastructure #infrastructureinvestment #evcharginginfrastructure #projectfinance

The solar industry is COMPLEX. Every state has different laws. Different financing partners. Different paths to market. It can feel overwhelming if you let it be. So, recently, when a strategic partner asked me, “How do you keep up with an industry as complex as solar?” I responded with what I believe to be the truth… “I’m not in the solar business. I’m in the relationship business.” Everyone – whether it’s our customers, team members, or vendors – is driven by the same motivation: Be seen. Be heard. Be understood. So, no matter which territory or industry you operate in, if you put those three things at the top of your strategic plan, you’ll find that any business becomes a bit simpler and a bit more enjoyable. After all, going it alone is no fun. - Sumit Bhatnagar #sustainabilityviasolarpower #PoweringASolarFuture #solarindustry #cleanenergy #solarmovement #sustainability #blazesolar

🚆🔋 Transforming the Tracks with Solar Energy 🌞 I am excited to look at inventions like this that do research now hope we can save it and bring you ready solar on our roads as well. Sun-Ways #SolarPower In Train Tracks This is a great way from an #Electrical #Engineering perspective to recover renewables without reducing the railway efficiency involvement. Solar technology integrated directly into our infrastructure supports sustainability efforts while at the same time lessening our dependence on #fossil fuels, reducing #CO2 #emissions. But what we do know is that the Sun Streams one facility will be able to generate up to 01 gigawatt (GW) of solar power, potentially enough electricity for several days worth operation. If they are used on a railway given #current and #voltage. Their design permits rapid capture and removal for maintenance without disrupting train operations so that we can stay focused on #safety, #efficiency and #eco #FriendlyTechnology. Not only will this #kickstart a drive toward greater #sustainability in rail operations, it solidifies our #eco-credentials. Kudos to #Sun-Ways for this innovative approach! #innovation #sustainability #railways #engineering #solarpower #cleanenergy 🔆 #sustainability

Unfinished solar installations. They’re more than just loose ends. For the solar industry, they're a call to action to raise our operating standards. Because bankrupt companies leave behind more than debt. They leave customers waiting and projects half-done. At GreenBrilliance, we believe in finishing what we start. And sometimes, what others started too. We know that an integrous industry will bring about change faster than one that is greedy. This ensures solar lives up to its promise. #sustainabilityviasolarpower #PoweringASolarFuture #solarindustry #cleanenergy #solarmovement #sustainability

This week's #teachingthursday reflects on the 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 solar project developers face, as they compete with other companies and pro-fossil fuels interests. From the outset, it is important to acknowledge that solar start-ups, as newcomers in the market, face a distinct set of challenges as compared to existing businesses that seek to tap into the solar sector. This is what we understands at "𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩-𝙪𝙥 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙨" colloquially. We will dive into these costs in details later in next few posts. The challenges associated to scaling up and creating more solar projects construct another set of costs, in addition to start-up costs. Expanding the installed capacity should be seen as a whole, different struggle because what it takes to 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 pilot projects is usually not enough to work through the 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 phase of the business. Scalability is crucial for business sustainability and long-term operations. This is what I see as "𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙪𝙢-𝙩𝙤-𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙨" pertaining to issues that top solar project developers are always considering at the back of their mind. Besides, a careful developer will know the various ways in which solar and other clean technology are positioned to disrupt the dominance of the fossil fuels industry. These efforts can also be costly for them in establishing a market niche, and I term these costs as "𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙨." We will dive into all three sets of costs soon. Which one are you most interested in? Drop your choice in the comment section! Cheers to lifelong learning!
