https://lnkd.in/gJC-kVPR Speaking truth to power is important. We all have a duty that way.
I share this excerpt (again) from my book Honest-To-Goodness because it is the "reality check" in the subtitle. We keep hearing how #Christian #evangelicals and other #conservative #Christians twist their beliefs into knots to justify supporting people who exhibit none of the qualities traditionally associated with #Christianity. I'm not criticizing the religion. I'm calling the corrupt version driven by #legalism and the lust for #political #power. The #hypocrisy of #evangelical support for #amoral #politics is on full display in the Trump trial with Stormy Daniels taking the stand, and taking a stand against a #liar and salacious misogynist. While she may not be a role model for many, she has had the courage to be #honest in the face of threats and #defamation of #character. That's more like Jesus than many so-called Christians would care to admit.

September 28, 2024 (Part 1 of 2 parts) God’s Grace Transforms Us “Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you.” Isaiah 43:4 NIV Would you agree with me that more Christians today know about the Ten Commandments than about the new covenant of God’s unmerited favor? For that matter, if you walked down Times Square in New York City and started to interview people at random, most would probably have heard about the Ten Commandments, but know nothing about the new covenant of grace that came by Jesus Christ. In fact, the world identifies Christianity with the Ten Commandments. Isn’t it sad that the world knows us by the laws that are obsolete and not by the unmerited favor that Christ died to give us? It is no wonder we are losing a whole new generation of young people to the world! The law holds no appeal or attraction, and the Bible itself calls the law obsolete (Heb. 8:13). If we keep on shoving the Ten Commandments down the throats of our young people, don’t be surprised when they are turned off by legalistic forms of Christianity. More importantly, don’t forget that the strength of sin is the law. The law has no power to stop sin. The law will not impart to them their precious identity in Christ, which will give them the strength to abstain from premarital sex, prevent them from getting into drug abuse, and stop them from losing their sexual identity. Only God’s own sacrifice on the cross can give them their new identity as a new creation in Christ Jesus! (To be continued on Part 2)

New Episode! Next Steps Show Featuring Pastor Jose Rodriguez 3-25-24 Source: https://lnkd.in/gvAXtHmw In this episode, we spotlight Pastor Jose Rodriguez, leader of Bible Baptist Temple Church since 1977, a beacon of spiritual guidance and scriptural education. His dedication over four decades has deeply impacted many lives. Faith and religion, distinct yet often interchanged, underline different aspects of human belief. Faith is a personal conviction in a higher power, existing independently of organized religion, which involves communal practices and shared beliefs. The dynamic nature of faith and religion in the U.S. is noteworthy, with predictions indicating a shift towards increasing numbers of religiously unaffiliated Americans by 2070. This change reflects evolving societal attitudes towards faith and its communal expression. Romans 13:1-7 highlights the importance of respecting governing authorities, integrating faith into civic responsibilities. Pastor Rodriguez offers invaluable insights into navigating personal belief and communal religion, engaging with societal structures through faith. #NextStepsShow #PuttingPeopleFirst #ConservativeNuyoRican #CommunityTalk

Losing Our Religion Former Southern Baptist pastor and Christianity Today editor-in-chief Russell Moore calls for repentance and renewal in American evangelicalism American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?” In Losing Our Religion, Russell Moore calls his fellow evangelical Christians to conversion over culture wars, to truth over tribalism, to the gospel over politics, to integrity over influence, and to renewal over nostalgia. With both prophetic honesty and pastoral love, Moore offers a word of counsel for how a new generation of disillusioned and exhausted believers can find a path forward after the crisis and confusion of the last several years. Believing the gospel is too important to leave it to hucksters and grifters, he shows how a Christian can avoid both cynicism and complicity in order to imagine a different, hopeful vision for the church. The altar call of the old evangelical revivals was both a call to repentance and the offer of a new start. In the same way, this book invites unmoored and discouraged Christians to step out into an uncertain future, first by letting go of the kind of cultural, politicized, status quo Christianity that led us to this moment of reckoning. Only when we see how lost we are, we can find our way again. Only when we bury what’s dead can we experience life again. Only when we lose our religion can we be amazed by grace again. https://lnkd.in/gZjvCTh7

Separation of Church & State? Not here in 🇺🇲!!! If you think religious beliefs have nothing to do with US policy with respect to the ongoing #genocide in #Gaza being executed by the terrorist state of 🇮🇱, think again. Here are some statements from just a few of our elected officials regarding 🇮🇱: “This entire matter is based upon faith of our maker…But it’s also faith of a Chosen people.” – Rep. Pete Sessions “There have been two nations created to glorify God...🇮🇱 & 🇺🇲. I will bless both. I will honor both. I will do all I can to stand & defend them.” – Rep. Lauren Boebert “Those who bless 🇮🇱 will be blessed. I believe Jesus will come back & I’m going to be on his side”. – Rep. Tim Burchett These are our lawmakers who draft & pass legislation, including sending billions of our tax dollars to 🇮🇱 to commit a #genocide in order to enable the “second coming of Jesus”. How can elected officials with such beliefs possibly pass legislation that is fair to ALL PEOPLE when they clearly believe in a “Chosen People”? How can we expect peace when our lawmakers have the underlying belief that armageddon is necessary to enable a second messianic coming? If our lawmakers believe that “Jews are the Chosen People”, what does that make them, since Evangelical Christians are not even Jewish? In fact, what does that make the rest of us??? This is #religiousextremism & cultist mentality. #freepalestine #zionism

Jesus was sentenced to death primarily because the religious authorities of his time, particularly the Jewish leaders, perceived him as a threat to their power and influence. His teachings challenged their traditional interpretations of the law, and his growing popularity among the people posed a potential destabilizing force. Lesser-known details include: 1. **Political implications:** Jesus' claim to be the Messiah could have been interpreted as a challenge to Roman authority, which the Jewish leaders feared might provoke a harsh response from the occupying Roman forces. 2. **Economic factors:** The cleansing of the temple, where Jesus overturned the tables of the money changers, disrupted the lucrative business interests of the temple elites. 3. **Betrayal by Judas:** While widely known, the role of Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' disciples, in betraying him to the authorities for thirty pieces of silver is often overshadowed by the larger narrative. 4. **Trial irregularities:** The legal proceedings against Jesus were marked by irregularities, including a rushed trial during the night and the use of false witnesses. 5. **Roman involvement:** While the Jewish authorities played a significant role, it was ultimately the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, who sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion, reflecting the complex interplay of religious and political dynamics in first-century Judea.

1moInsightful but there is so much more that doesn't add up between the two faiths. My 78 year old mother has two women JWs that live next door and are constantly talking about their faith to her. It's hard for her.
