💜 Meet Misses the piglet💜 Misses survived a house fire, and was able to get the immediate care and treatment she needed because of the kind humans at FEEDING PETS OF THE HOMELESS® ♡. There are so many kiddos who are in need of care and treatment, but their humans are sadly not able to meet those needs due to homelessness and lack of financial means. This holiday season, if you're looking for a non for profit to donate to, consider feeding pets of the homeless 🐾💙 this wonderful organization helps keep kiddos and their humans together by ensuring the kiddos receive the care they need that their humans wouldn't be able to afford for them. There are so many wonderful ways to contribute: -donating funds directly, donating items to a drop off location, purchasing items and sending them to their HQ, and buying things from their wish lists. The sun beats down on the dirt outside a Phoenix soup kitchen. Our street medicine provider stands beside a young woman, her eyes fixed on the ground. "Deep breath for me," she says gently, hands ready. At this moment, the weight of our mission becomes clear. The numbers are stark: From April 2023 to March 2024, Maricopa County saw a troubling trend: for every ten people who found housing, 19 more were facing homelessness. Over the past year, 31,071 unique individuals were served through street outreach, emergency shelters, and transitional housing, according to the Maricopa Association of Governments Homelessness Trends data. This young woman is one of those 31,071. She has a story, a past, and a hope for the future. Our mission is to meet people like her where they are, offering immediate, compassionate care and a glimmer of hope. Our teams hit these streets daily, offering healthcare, resources, and connections to those often overlooked. Everyone deserves a shot at rewriting their story, no matter where they lay their heads at night. It's a poignant reminder that for those living unsheltered, the harsh realities of summer aren't just uncomfortable – they can be deadly. At Circle the City, we know that moments like these are all too familiar. Every day, our Street Medicine teams brave the blistering heat to bring lifesaving care to those most vulnerable. But as temperatures soar, so does the need for a critical resource: water. That's why we're turning to our community for help. This Saturday, June 1st, from 9am-12pm, we're hosting a Thirst Aid Public Water Drop-off event at the Keys to Change Campus (1300 W Harrison St). By donating water at this event, you're directly supporting the work captured in this photo – you're helping us ensure that our Street Medicine teams can continue to provide not just medical care, but also the hydration that's so vital for survival for those experiencing homelessness. Shelter (2023) share some bleak statistics on a 74% rise in homelessness in the last 10 years. They also state that at least 271,000 people in England are homeless, including as many as 123,000 children. With the current cost of living crisis, financial insecurity is effecting more and more people. Financial strain (debt and unemployment) are significant risk factors for future homelessness (Medical Care, 2021). Helping those in need and fighting this issue is important now more than ever. Shelter “exist to defend the right to a safe home.” To name a few of the things they do, they support renters rights, demand more social housing and have fought for the introduction of the Social Housing Regulation Act. They have a 365 day emergency helpline and have expert information accessible on their website. They also provide free legal advice to those who have lost their home or face eviction. On the 6th of December, I am participating in a 10 k walk with the Shelter Charity to fight against homelessness. Assistance includes housing search, case management, leasing support, first month’s rent, security deposit, and ongoing rental aid. Ongoing case management for financial and housing stability. 🌟 Note: RRH Program eligibility is based on housing status and income, with income eligibility at 30% of the Annual Median Income (AMI). The statistics are frightening: 1 out of every 20 people is without a home, and a much larger percentage of residents go through each day without enough money to pay for adequate food and other basic necessities. Fortunately, compassionate and informed citizens, such as yourself, understand the reality of these problems and feel compelled to contribute to the solution. Smit Old Age Home and Care Foundation provides such solutions. For the past two decades, our organization has taken a clear and honest look at the problems of homelessness and hunger in our city. Smit Old Age Home and Care Foundation has been analyzing the causes and conditions, establishing pragmatic and compassionate programs to relieve suffering, forging new methods of intervention, and advancing the fight for more support in the public and governmental spheres. However, upholding these intentions requires a good deal of financial support. I canceled Thanksgiving this year. Initially, my family frowned at the idea of missing their favorite turkey, stuffing, mac and cheese, and sweet potato pie. Instead, we bundled up and spent that day and the weekend that followed cooking and serving food to the hungry. On Thanksgiving day, we delivered meals directly to homes that requested them. I grew up here. Yet this delivery assignment took me to parts of my backyard I'd never seen. In the following days, we cooked and served 250 homeless at a local park near a large homeless encampment. I'm a physician. My day job is service. What more could I learn here? Well, I've "volunteered" before, but not quite like this, where we talked with and ate alongside those in need. What would my kids take away from this experience? It's too much for a LinkedIn post, but it can easily be summarised by saying we got more than we gave this Thanksgiving. The gratitude, the goodness of heart, the joy emanating from each person who needed our help was soul-shaking. I grew up in a household where sometimes the TV was off for a few days or the power was out on Thursday but back on Friday. It was feast or famine. The stories shared with us often involved one small thing, an illness or a job loss, that resulted in the current situation. It really can be any of us or anyone you know. The poverty rate among children saw a sizeable increase, more than doubling from 5.2% in 2021 to 12.4% last year, census data shows. Poverty and the lack of affordable housing are the primary causes of homelessness in families. How Many Children and Families Experience Homelessness? On a single night in January 2021: An estimated 161,070 people in families — or 51,000 family households — were identified as homeless. Approximately 17,337 people in families were living on the street, in a car, or in another place not meant for human habitation. In 2020, an estimated 470,000 people in 132,000 family households used an emergency shelter or a transitional housing program. Our contribution was trivial compared to the workers who do this day in and day out when there is no holiday in sight. The Government have just released the latest Homelessness statistics and they don't make for good reading... We’ve reached yet another appalling milestone in the housing emergency. As thousands of children in England start their exams, government data published yesterday shows that a record-breaking 145,800 children are homeless in temporary accommodation with their families. This is a 15% increase in just one year. The figures for England show: A total of 112,660 households were homeless and living in temporary accommodation at the end of 2023 – another record-high figure and up 12% in a year. Known as core homelessness, it includes rough sleeping, people living in sheds, garages and other unconventional buildings, sofa surfing, hostels and unsuitable temporary accommodation such as B&Bs. A record 145,800 children were homeless and living in temporary accommodation with their families – an increase of 19,460 in a year These figures are not just high, they’re unprecedented. There have never been this many households stuck in temporary accommodation before. Temporary accommodation was never intended to exist outside of emergencies. *Homelessness is devastating, dangerous and isolating. *The average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 46 for men and 42 for women. *People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than one in three people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless. *People experiencing homelessness are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population. National Homeless Persons’ Remembrance Day is a day to remember the lives of those who have died while experiencing homelessness and might otherwise be forgotten.⁠ ⁠ Studies show the death toll of our US homeless population has increased significantly over the past 5-10 years. Our Servant’s House emergency shelter can house 70 individuals.⁠ ⁠ Unfortunately, at a given time, there are hundreds of thousands of homeless individuals, 40% of which are families, in our country. These folks are therefore at a higher risk of death through a combination of factors including different forms of abuse, food insecurity, lack of shelter, and poor healthcare.⁠ ⁠ Today, let’s honor those who are facing the hardship of homelessness and those who have passed from its effects. May we take the time to be a part of the solution by working at our local level to make an impact.⁠ ⁠ Should you wish to be part of a Memorial event and show your solidarity, there are in-person and virtual vigils held nationwide.
