As you know, 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐋 is dedicated to educating the public and ensuring safe access to cannabis in Kentucky. Your support funds our critical work, which is informed, inclusive, and life-changing. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We were instrumental in the passage of Senate Bill 47, paving the way for legal medical cannabis in Kentucky. 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: We organized the first-ever Kentucky Cannabis Conference, a fantastic event for education and networking among industry pros, lawmakers, and advocates. 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We regularly host educational sessions and livestreams on YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn, covering everything from the history of medical cannabis to the latest legal updates. 𝐕𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: We’ve developed voter guides and candidate questionnaires to keep everyone informed about where candidates stand on cannabis issues. 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐛𝐛𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠: We organize lobby days and provide resources for folks to contact their legislators and push for cannabis reform. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: We host events like the Kentucky NORML Medical Cannabis Patient Registration Fairs and Expos bringing together recommending doctors and industry experts to educate patients on cannabis use. Prescription Drug Costs impact a household (and those of us who are sandwiched-generation caregivers know this first-hand). According to a new report, "most adults 50 and older pay out-of-pocket for prescription drugs, with one-fifth having spent $1,000 or more on prescription drugs in the last year. 🎉2023 has been another remarkable year for drug policy reform - a testament to all those working hard to achieve more just and effective drug policies! Thank you to everyone who’s supported over the year - without you this wouldn’t be possible. Here are some of our highlights! 1. Legally regulated non-medical cannabis went on sale in the Netherlands - an EU first! This is a part of the country’s efforts to close the ‘back door’ supply of illegally grown cannabis to coffee shops. 2. The UK’s first supervised drug consumption facility was given the green light to operate in Scotland. Overdose Prevention Centres are winning community support all over the world. 3. In a historic first, the UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights became the first UN agency to recommend Member states to explore regulation, as part of its response to the human rights costs of the ‘war on drugs’. 4. Malta’s groundbreaking cannabis reforms moved from paper to reality - with the first 5 licences being issued for the new not-for-profit membership based cannabis associations. We’ve been working closely with the country and are excited to see the progress.    5. The Scottish Government produced a groundbreaking vision for the future of Scottish drug policy. It calls for a compassionate approach rooted in human rights and public health - including the end to criminalising people who use drugs AND exploration of models legal drug regulation. 6. Another great year for Anyone's Child's campaign for drug policy reform, welcoming new members, meeting with MPs and policy makers, speaking at amazing events across the country, and another successful lobby at Westminster. 7. Transform launched the Portuguese translation of our cannabis regulation guide, with our partners Justa at a series of events at the University of Sao Paulo, and in the Brazilian Congress in Brazilia. 8. We visited New York with our Blaksox allies and met the legendary civil rights icon rev Al Sharpton to discuss the key role of the legal regulation of cannabis in the US to the fight for racial justice. 9. We launched our new guide, How to Regulate Psychedelics, proposing a 4-tiered model for the wide range of psychedelic drugs, consumption behaviours, and cultures of use. It addresses non-medical psychedelic use, often sidelined in the mainstream debate. Thank you to everyone who helped make these successes possible. 🌟 I believe #transparency is vital in healthcare. The U.S. House recently passed a bill aiming to enhance healthcare price transparency—a crucial step towards cost reduction. But what more is needed for patient-centered savings? Beyond this bill, one area that certainly requires significant attention and reform is the role of the Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs). 🏥 PBMs, as intermediaries between insurers, pharmacies, and drug manufacturers, influence retail drug prices and negotiate rebates. However, their complex funds flow lacks clarity for clinicians and patients. PBMs use various tools like higher cost-sharing tiers, step therapy, prior authorization, indication restriction, and excluding drugs from formularies to create cost savings (NOT for patients). These strategies often shift costs TO patients or limit drug access. 📊 With the current model, patients pay high $$$$$ (or inflated) list prices at the retail level, while pharmaceutical manufacturers return some of the $$$ money they collect as payments to intermediaries in the market in the form of drug rebates to pharmaceutical benefit managers or chargebacks to drug distributors.  These $$$ payments remain largely hidden from physicians and the general public and it appears that they have grown disproportionately in the last decade.🤔 ( see as an example https://lnkd.in/eHspRz7Z) I advocate for a transparency that includes the value equation, encompassing both quality and cost, which are currently obscure to patients and clinicians. This is especially true with the current PBM role. 🤔 Not sure the "juice" in this bill has any value teeth or that it's truly chewing on important healthcare cost areas. 💡 #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter https://lnkd.in/eazAsaZv

The UK Biobank is a fantastic resource, carefully designed, with in-depth genetic data and health information on 0.5 million participants and long-term follow-up. Facilitating access to the UK Biobank database to researchers from LMICs will help them: 1. Improve their research capacity. I see more students gaining access to this resource for either training purposes or their degree programs. This will, at least, transform how epidemiology and medical statistics is being taught. 2. Continue contributing to high-quality global health research, tackling some of the most pressing global health challenges. 3. Build international collaborations with researchers from other countries. These benefits would: 1. Bridge the current research gap between high-income countries and LMICs. 2. Facilitate access to global research opportunities. 3. Improve economic benefit via increased ability to compete from research grants.
