🌍🩺 Every year, the US discards a staggering 5 MILLION TONS of usable medical supplies (equivalent to 950 pounds) every 3 SECONDS. But have you ever wondered why? Federal regulations often force the disposal of even sterile, unused supplies. It's a complex problem that needs a solution. Since 2008, our dedicated Afya family, including many volunteers, has worked tirelessly to collect, sort, and find new purposes for these supplies in hospitals and clinics across the globe where they're needed most. We've already diverted over 15 million pounds of usable medical supplies from landfills and delivered them to over 80 nations. But here's the exciting part – we're just getting started. Want to join us in making a change? There are numerous ways to get involved. 🤲 Volunteer with us! 🩺 Advocate for supply donations in your healthcare network. 🤝 Partner your organization or community with us. 💌 Contribute the link in the comments –No act of generosity is too small to make a difference! Partnering with local media can be invaluable in raising awareness of hospice funding challenges. It also helps mobilise support from the local community. Bolton Hospice worked with an Editor to secure a weekly spot in their local newspaper. Each issue shared hospice stories with the public, addressing misconceptions and highlighting the importance of hospice services. Want to do something similar at your hospice? CEO and founder of Helium Arts - Supporting the wellbeing of children living with lifelong physical health conditions
Delighted to have Helium Arts key findings from our 2023 Impact Report get a mention in the Irish Medical Times yesterday. Highlights from the report include the following: Of those surveyed- 84 per cent of children reported they felt happier when going to hospital and 100% of parents said that their child’s mood was positively impacted. Seeing their children happier meant that 98 per cent of parents reported their own mood was positively impacted while in the hospital waiting room. 97 per cent of medical professionals reported that their experience of delivering healthcare to children with lifelong physical health conditions was positively impacted. 51 per cent of community programme participants came from rural areas, 39 per cent were from disadvantaged backgrounds, and 53 per cent had a disability or additional needs, with research showing that children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds and those who live in more rural areas face greater challenges due to lifelong physical health conditions. 100 per cent of parents and medical professionals reported that their awareness of the positive impact of arts and creativity for wellbeing was increased. https://lnkd.in/ef_9_Dce You can find the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eg-v383w

'Food is Medicine' Quantity and Quality - less can be more! Let food be thy medicine and for prevention is better than cure (not that a cure can exist in a system). The 'cure' is an example of wishful thinking which confounds the principle underlying Science - of rationality given what we now (and have known for years!) know. The entire body either collapses if we age badly or strengthens if we age well - where the Ageing reversal community have compiled a list of anti-ageing interventions. Most notably restriction of a certain profile of foods and the development of mitochondria within this metabolic context.

Food is Medicine. Lifestyle medicine practitioners understand how to prescribe this approach to their patients to tackle the burden of lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Our commitment to the Food is Medicine movement extends beyond individual efforts. VIDEO. You live in the hospital? 😳. Well, do you know of a better way to understand everything, well almost everything about hospitals? How they work, how they are run, what every machine and ward does, know a lot of the staff, a day in the life of a hospital. I lived in every single hospital my mother was in. I made some business sacrifices, but I was never going to leave her side, just too loyal and faithful a son. People think you are staff. When they announce that visiting hours are over, some hospitals tell you that you can stay, you sleep on the floor or a chair, some even give you a cot somewhere in the hospital or a private room overnight. Every hospital is different, some don't allow overnight stays, but a number of hospitals in Western Canada have a completely different philosophy and approach than hospitals in the rest of Canada, to patients' family members, friendliness to family members of patients' families, patients' family rooms and accommodation, or they find you a place to stay near to the hospital, some even have other buildings on hospital campus especially for patients' families to stay. You know a lot of things about hospitals, even different philosophies and operations. Click on the exit on the top right to access the video. You can learn so much about hospitals, if you really want to.

National Public Health Week Starts Today!! During each day of National Public Health Week, the MPH team has created a one pager that focuses on a particular public health topic. The purpose is to help to highlight how each of us can make a difference on that topic. These areas are critical to our future success in creating the healthiest nation. Think about what you can do to help. Please see below to learn more about Civic Engagement and my challenge to you. Learn more at nphw.org. #nationalpublichealthweek Civic Engagement Challenge What is civic engagement? Civic engagement is the formal and informal actions that we and our communities take to identify and address problems and shapes our opportunities to be healthy. By taking actions to get more civically engaged, like voting, we exercise our right to make decisions about our communities, like whether our neighborhoods have walkable sidewalks and how much funding goes to nonprofit organizations to help vulnerable populations. By engaging in professional or community service we help to improve a community’s health. A recent analysis of civic engagement and state health outcomes from 1996 to 2020 showed that in states where people are more civically engaged and vote more, public health outcomes are better. I challenge you to become more civically engaged! 1. Vote and help someone else vote in the next election within your community (e.g. provide transportation or fill in for them at work). 2. Volunteer in your community. 3. Serve on a committee that affects the health of your community – contact your local schools, churches, non-profit groups, state public health organization for opportunities. Share your experiences with family and friends!
National Public Health Week is finally here!
