Do you work to live or live to work? I don't know about you but you can't help but over hear conversations on the train. Most of the time it's white noise that gets tuned out by the rumble of train on tracks as the countryside whizzes past....(thought; oh they actually got permission to build on the old chemical factory?!). Just this week there were two colleagues turned friends (I also make up the back stories and context of my people watching...or is that my profiling brain never switching off.... I'll let you judge me on that one) having a chat about birthday get togethers, the frustrations of attending things when there's no direct train route and holidays. The holiday chat is what drew me in and got my full attention. 'she took 3 weeks off, I mean, does she not how much work that leaves for everyone else'. What struck me the most is that that was me about 25 years ago. Feeling stuck in a council job that sucked every bit of joy from my soul, I'd internally moan about others choices. Urgh, everything was happening 'to me'. They'd clearly made a selfish choice and not thought about others. Never mind the small thing that YOU get a holiday allocation and YOU get to use it how you want. The to-do list will always be there. You won't. Fast forward to now, crikey, I take holidays and breaks when I blinkin well please. I love what I do but time is a non renewable resource so I'm going to go on the ski holiday, take many long weekends to go away in my campervan, take a random Wednesday off to catch up with friends or have a lie in on a Friday morning so I can make the most of my weekend. At the end, you're not going to regret taking those 3 weeks off to carry the workload, you'll regret not taking more time for you. Do the thing and maybe, more importantly, respect when others decide to do their thing. Work to live, don't live to work. **** I'm Cat and I take as many breaks, naps and holidays as humanly possible. Working to live so my headstone isn't just dates, but a life CV filled with joy and experiences and laughter and all the things.
Plus, you can't worry about what everyone else is thinking Cat Paterson. Way too often we make decisions based on what others will say, think or feel, rather than taking care of ourselves. And then you'll always regret the time you didn't take to take care of yourself. Good for that person for taking their 3 weeks. I spend a lot more time taking care of me now, as well.

7moI've always thought that if an employee feels the need to moan about extra workload due to a colleague taking legit time off, then that's a management problem for not planning the work out properly and factoring leave in. Maybe I'm just not a "team player" (ugh!) but I never felt personally responsible for that, or duty-bound to work my arse off even more!
