Hedge funds in 2023 found success in a strategy centered around insurance-linked securities, primarily catastrophe bonds, marking it as the best-performing bet of the year. However, as mainstream investors increasingly flock to this strategy, the associated risk models are becoming more challenging to decipher. Fermat Capital Management, LLC and Tenax Capital achieved their largest returns ever within this asset class. The reliance on insurance-linked securities introduces new risks, particularly from 'secondary perils,' leading to increased complexity in risk assessment for hedge funds pursuing this strategy. As financial markets continue to face headwinds and given the SA econonic growth that continues to be challenged as per the recent budget speech, bringing hedge fund exposure into the investment portfolio mix can provide a measure of protection against uncertainty. The video also discusses the practice of short selling, a hedging strategy, where a hedge fund manager borrows stock A, expecting its price to drop in the future. They then sell it in the market, hoping to repurchase it later at a lower price, return it to the lender, and profit from the price difference minus borrowing costs.

I recently spoke with Eddy Augsten of Concurrent about the RIA's plans to expand its alternatives exposure across middle-market private equity funds and hedge funds. Like other allocators, Concurrent likes the size and diversity of the middle market. And in hedge funds, it sees an opportunity to counteract the concentration in public markets.
