Field notes from South Sulawesi A joy to work alongside the Mars sustainable solutions team expanding their Sheba Hope Grows coral restoration project late August. This ambitious restoration effort aims to restore 185,000 square meters of reef by 2030 through local partnerships in Palau, Hawaii (Kuleana Coral Restoration), The Maldives (Maldives Coral Institute), Kenya (The Ocean Trust), Australia, Mexico (OCEANUS AC), Aruba, Colombia (Corals De Paz), USVI (TNC) and Costa Rica (Raising Coral). I spend a lot of time thinking — and when I can, activating — conversations with brands, corporations, and really anyone who will listen on how to best integrate biodiversity considerations into their roadmaps. Beyond the tried and true sustainability power moves — like investing in biobased packaging, requiring supplier disclosure of emissions, aligning with organizations like @1percentftp, shifting from air to ocean freight, setting science-based targets, and so on and so forth — it’s been interesting and refreshing to see how a privately held company with deep, deep pockets invests in hands-on ecosystem restoration projects. Global corps with expansive supply chains and reach have an inherent responsibility to innovate on the environmental front. More of this, at scale, please. https://lnkd.in/dcmuE77N

The Robeco Hong Kong office recently visited Hoi Ha Marine Park as part of our global sustainability week. Nestled on the shore of the Sai Kung Peninsula, Hoi Ha is one of Hong Kong’s most pristine coastal environments and a refuge for coral reefs and marine life. At the Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre, the WWF-Hong Kong team provided great insights into the importance of corals and phytoplankton for our marine ecosystem.   Our colleagues learned several facts about Hong Kong marine biodiversity, including:  🐠Hong Kong is home to 84 species of hard corals, supporting higher coral diversity than the Caribbean Sea.  🐠These coral communities are a vital part of our marine ecosystems, playing a critical role in maintaining the health of Hong Kong waters and nurturing 25% of marine life in China. 🐠Once destroyed, it is very difficult for coral communities to recover independently.   Seeing nature up close was an eye-opening reminder that the health of our planet directly impacts the long-term sustainability of our investments. As an asset manager focusing on sustainability, we believe the loss of biodiversity and natural habitats represents a systemic risk, and is therefore highly relevant for investors.     Learn more why we care about biodiversity: http://ro-be.co/47c48c

The International Day for Biodiversity theme for 2024 is "Be part of the Plan" This day is a call to our global community to respect, protect and rebuild out biological wealth. It is an absolute truth that we remain completely dependent on nature and healthy ecosystems not only for our food and water, but medicines, fuel, clothes, shelter, amongst others. Governments, lawmakers, non-governmental institutions, individuals, all have a role to play in the preservation of biodiversity. There's a renewed hope with the adoption of the Kunming-Monreal Global Biodiversity Framework, signed in 2022, that sets specific measurable goals to stop and reverse the loss and damage of our natural resources by 2050, and Linnea is fully committed to this goal and giving back to nature, implementing it at the core of its business. #Linnea #BiodiversityDay #PartOfThePlan #ForNature

Friday was a busy one at Work.Life but we're still committed to the cause 💚 Here's Ella Ward's sustainability update for last week... better late than never right? ✨ Did you know indigenous communities protect 80% of our world’s biodiversity? 🖼 In contrast to current privatisation and development practices which have led to degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change, Indigenous Peoples have practised sustainability throughout history. Today many Indigenous Peoples are at the frontline, advocating for nature. 💪 - The Yuturi Warmi are a multi-generational group of women who patrol the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. Using drones and cameras, they gather evidence of illegal pollution, mining, deforestation and oiling activity to share with the government. 📸 - The Indigenous Guardians is a growing, successful and growing group combining traditional knowledge and modern technology to monitor the impacts of extractive industries across Canada. 🦌 The Maasai people of the Chyulu Hills, Kenya have been reaching out to a number of United-Nations backed initiatives to provide financial aid to keep their forests intact after increasing agricultural degradation. 🌳 - The Waorani people have been fighting against destructive activity in the Amazon rainforest. In 2019 they won a historic court battle when the Ecuadorean government tried to sell their territory for oil drilling, leading to the protection of 7 million acres of Amazon rainforest. 🐘 - In Fiji, the Indigenous community has partnered with the Government to launch a conservation project aiming to support over a quarter of their country’s ocean area. Their reefs support migrating Whales and are breeding grounds for endangered turtle species. 🐢

How did you celebrate our remarkable planet today on Earth Day? While we wholeheartedly agree that the importance of environmental conservation does not and should not have significance on just one day every year, Earth Day is, in fact, another necessary reminder of the importance of sustainability - an annual nudge for all of us to pick up the renewable pace. A day that encourages us to come together and take action to ensure a healthier planet and brighter future for generations to come, it’s up to all of us to collectively take action. Working in silos and protecting our own methods of ‘being a bit more green’, will only get us so far. Working for the greater good, to proactively educate each other and the younger generations especially is where the real change will happen. We, like so many other businesses in the area, are beavering away to do our bit to put the planet as well as our community and its growth first. There is so much more to come - some of which we can hopefully show you this week - which is dedicated to showcasing cutting-edge sustainable practices and community development to shape our immediate, and wider, world for the better.
