We are grateful to all the speakers and guests who joined us for our “Tall Poppies and Glass Cliffs: Lessons With Women in Leadership event with Women of Influence+ last week! A special thanks to Tamara Thermitus, Ad. E., visiting scholar, McGill Centre for Human Rights & Legal Pluralism (CHRLP), and the first Black woman to lead the Quebec Human Rights Commission, who shared her reflections on being forced out of the commission owing to racism: “I didn’t know the strength that I had.” And the way ahead? “The goal, from my perspective, is social change,” she said. We also thank Rumeet Billan, Ph.D., CEO and owner of Women of Influence+, who spoke about what happens when women succeed: they get cut down, to match the “size” of others around them. “It has a name: Tall Poppy Syndrome,” she said. She presented compelling figures showing companies are losing their top talent owing to those women being undermined and criticized by all levels of seniority. Wendy Cukier, DI’s founder and academic director, who is also the research lead for the Future Skills Centre - Centre des Compétences futures, highlighted that women in leadership positions are more scrutinized and judged, and held to higher standards—and Black and other racialized women even more so. That glass cliff? Women are jumping or getting pushed off, owing to the impossible standards they face. The presentations sparked much discussion, including about some solutions: ✔ Name the behaviours that push women out of leadership positions to raise awareness and accountability within and outside organizations. ✔ Recognize that woman are treated differently when successful—and it’s not just top-down. It is from colleagues, direct reports and all levels of staff. ✔ Surround the high-achieving “tall poppies” with taller poppies to help them get where they need to be. ✔ Don’t give up—a tall order, to be certain. ✔ Finally, and critically, diversify what success looks like. The day also made clear that voluntary codes like the #50_30Challenge, which encourages organizations to achieve gender parity and increased diversity on their boards and/or senior management teams, are essential. 🌟 Last week, I had the privilege of attending the 24th annual EQUALL Conference hosted by the Women in Business Club at LBS. It was an inspiring gathering, bringing together remarkable women driving change across industries worldwide. From discussions on Investing in Women Entrepreneurs to Healthcare and Sustainability, the spectrum of topics covered was truly enlightening. Amidst the wealth of insights shared, I want to highlight two key takeaways: 1️⃣ Own your Black Book Achievements: Ladies, it's essential to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments. Keep a record of your achievements and proudly showcase them to the world. You're brilliant, and there's no reason to downplay your successes. 2️⃣ Find your Advocate: Having a mentor within your organization who understands your capabilities and actively supports your growth can propel you forward significantly. Identify someone who can champion your talents and amplify your voice. Belated Happy International Women's Day to all the incredible women out there! Let's continue breaking barriers and uplifting each other. 💪🚀 #EQUALLConference #WomenInBusiness #Empowerment

Rosenberg & Estis, P.C. is thrilled to see Member, Arielle Frost featured in this month’s New York Real Estate Journal 2024 Women in CRE Spotlight! Choosing the firm isn’t always easy and finding the right fit is imperative. We are delighted that Arielle chose R&E to call her home. What are the most important factors young women should consider when choosing a firm to build their career with? “Look at whether women hold leadership positions within the firm, whether the firm is focusing on DEI initiatives, and whether there is transparency regarding the criteria to advance through the ranks. Consider whether the firm is willing to clearly set forth and commit to how you will be compensated. Ask to speak to other women at the firm during the hiring process and ask the tough questions that you may be nervous about asking. Then analyze everything you have learned about the firm and ask yourself if you believe you will be valued, respected and fairly compensated at the firm.”

In the modern work environment, despite a woman CEO candidate being the most qualified, integrating her into the current company culture is still challenging. 🔍 Take a look at the discussion between Chris Murdock and the Founder of CEOX, Luann Abrams, as they discuss the challenges organizations face when elevating women to executive-level positions within their companies: https://hubs.la/Q02d4PTx0
