William Shakespeare (1564-1616) wrote 38 plays and died in comfortable but nowhere near extravagant financial standing. Eugene Scribe (1791-1861) — a far less well-known today but arguably far more influential playwright — wrote over 400 theatrical works and died phenomenally wealthy. Scribe is known for having invented "the well-made play", which is perhaps more familiarly understood as "formulaic melodrama." Essentially, Scribe invented the dramatic form that evolved into most television episodes. When speculating about the emerging impact of #generativeAI, the bar of disruption isn't timeless greatness. It's good-enough adequacy. Almost all of the content that each of us is exposed to on a daily basis is formulaic. It's predictable. Although occasionally transformed with some alteration of the seasoning, it's all been done before — and now it has to have been because it all comes down to the training data.

When I want a pick me up, I turn to fun and inspiring music clips. I am particularly fond of talent show auditions. (Did you watch the amazing 2024 audition of America's Got Talent's winner, Richard Goodall, self-described school janitor?) One of my all-time favorite clips is the dance scene from the 1986 teen classic, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." ScreenRant.com reports that roughly ten thousand movie extras showed up to add to the party atmosphere of a John Hughes production, filmed in downtown Chicago. I'm not alone in savoring these bursts of audiovisual energy. Any time I mention the "Twist and Shout" parade dance by Matthew Broderick playing Ferris, people tell me how much they love watching this scene. Why wouldn't they? The two-minute scene is a happy respite from stress. My research about effective #businessstorytelling techniques validates the power of joy as an action-oriented emotion. If given a choice, most buyers opt for #joy and other types of positive vibes. If you haven't seen this cheerful video, check it out. https://lnkd.in/eqHMiFr6

Friday Film Club: Love and Mercy - The Power of Creativity and Resilience in the Face of Adversity Welcome back to Friday Film Club! As a lifelong admirer of the way music shapes lives and mirrors our innermost struggles, Love and Mercy offers a deeply moving exploration of the highs and lows of the human experience. This biographical drama about Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys is not just a story about creating iconic music; it’s a powerful narrative about resilience, creativity, and the courage to break free from the bonds of toxic relationships. The film skillfully shifts between two pivotal chapters in Brian’s life: the young prodigy, played by Paul Dano, as he pours his heart into the groundbreaking Pet Sounds, and the older Brian, portrayed by John Cusack, as he navigates the controlling grip of an exploitative guardian. This dual narrative underscores how extraordinary creativity can coexist with profound personal turmoil- and how recovery and self-reclamation are always possible, no matter how broken the path may seem. Brian’s connection to flow - the state of pure, immersive focus - is beautifully illustrated. Watching him transform fragments of sound into musical masterpieces reveals the transcendence that comes from being completely aligned with your purpose. It’s a powerful reminder that creativity can be both a sanctuary and a defiance, offering light in the darkest moments. From a positive psychology perspective, Love and Mercy is a testament to resilience and self-empowerment. Brian’s journey is a poignant example of how reconnecting with your strengths and finding genuine support can lead to profound transformation, even after years of struggle. If you’re inspired by stories of creative brilliance, love the magic of music, or seek a reminder of how hope can emerge from hardship, Love and Mercy is a must-watch. It’s a deeply human story that reminds us we all have the strength to reclaim our lives and thrive. https://lnkd.in/eqeKigTP
