A new grad's DS part 2: I heard so many of my instructors talk about “wow, you guys only need 8 crowns and you complain about it. We had to do 25 just to take boards.” I get that, I sincerely do. But, schools are set up completely different in most cases with “comprehensive care,” as the model. You get assigned a patient, and see what their needs are. It’s a mixed bag. It could be a lot, it could be very little. The faculty could then say “this patient is too complex for undergrad clinic, let’s ship them up to GPR/AEGD.” There goes the 6 crowns you had banked on getting. And the comprehensive model forces an inefficient schedule as far as learning straight skills are concerned. A time slot, instead of being taken up by a possible crown/bridge or future endo patient, is taken up by a periodic and prophy patient with no needs bc you don’t want your recall percentage to be too low.

Do you have a member of staff who wants to train as a #dispensingoptician?Or maybe they don’t know yet, but you feel they would make an ideal candidate? Take our student S who was working weekends and holidays in the family optical practice while studying for #ALevels. S had already decided they were going to follow their mum, dad and older sister into optics but hated sixth form. Then S attended a #UCLan #OpenDay to find out about our #BSc (Hons) #Ophthalmic #Dispensing programme. S was really pleased to discover our course does not require A Levels – just 5 GCSEs including maths, science, and English language plus one year’s optical work experience (even part time). Because our course is accelerated (2-year fast track taught over all 3 semesters September to August) and delivered by blended learning S was able to work full time for the practice and attends #university 1 week approximately every 2 months (12 weeks total in 2 years) and will qualify and register as a dispensing #optician, all being well, at the age of 19. Let’s compare this to the original plan of doing a full-time BSc (Hons) Dispensing Optician Registerable Award. Firstly, starting a year earlier and qualifying in 2 years rather than 3 means 2 years of additional qualified salary to put towards a house deposit for example. Secondly working full time and studying by blended learning rather than having a part time job / holiday work means being around £10,000 per year better off for the two years of the course assuming minimum wage and assuming someone studying full time at university (with unpaid work placements) can find part time / holiday work. Even after-tax S will be around £50,000 better off than their sister once earnings are taken into account – that £50,000 if invested at 3% interest at aged 19 would provide a pension pot of £200,000 by the standard retirement age of 67. Food for thought? Then factor in the cost of the course £22,200 at UCLan compared to £27,750 for a traditional 3-year degree, and the fact that you are living at home and only having to fund accommodation for 6 weeks per year rather than 30+ weeks, why would anyone study via a traditional full-time route? 3 Priceless Pieces of USMLE Step 1 Prep Advice I Wish I Knew Before My Exam ⬇️ Want to maximize your USMLE Step 1 prep efforts, save time, and get results faster than the average medical student? Follow these 3 pieces of advice & it's inevitable: #1. PRACTICE QUESTIONS ❓ Taking time to thoroughly review your questions is equally as (or more) important than volume. When you slow down and take time to review everything you've covered in a block of questions, you can better identify your mistakes & fix them moving forward. You'll find that if you slow down the reviewing of your questions, a lot more can be gained than from simply plowing forward blindly with more and more questions. Remember... Doing questions is the first step in identifying your weaknesses... If you don't actually slow down to identify them, you're taking the journey without all of the necessary information to reach your destination. #2. FIRST AID 📕 The First Aid is a great resource that was created as a review tool. It was never intended to be used as a substitute for deep, thorough understanding of the basic sciences... Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, this became the norm. Use it... But as a way to review the highest-yield info... Never as a substitute for real book learning. #3. NBME EXAMS 🧠 There's nothing wrong with using question bank assessments or our USMLEDx assessments during your prep... Any type of assessment you can get your hands on (done online that provides you with immediate feedback), can be an excellent way to make sure you're moving in the right direction. But to determine your actual exam readiness... With close to 100% accuracy... NBMEs are unbeatable. Take them, use the feedback to identify your remaining weaknesses, and use that info to focus your prep moving forward. You're likely already using these 3 tools...
