Understanding animal behavior has always required careful observation, but a new study highlights a significant advancement in minimizing observer bias, which has historically skewed results. This research confirms that over the past decade, animal behavior studies increasingly adhere to best practices that reduce potential biases, such as using blind protocols and second observers. These methods ensure more accurate data, strengthening the foundation of knowledge in this field and enhancing public trust. The findings underscore the importance of rigorous methodologies in animal behavior research, paving the way for deeper insights into both animal and human behavior. EARA was happy to chair and present this session on Transparency Agreements in Europe at the recent Understanding Animal Research #Openness24 conference! The session featured several members of the EARA Board and EARA ambassadors, who each spoke about the progress of these openness initiatives in their respective countries and their impact on improving transparency with the public on animal research. #EARA #TransparencyAgreement #AnimalResearch #OpenAnimalResearch
The final session from the conference discussed openness across Europe! Our speakers included Javier Guillen with AAALAC International, Ana Isabel Moura Santos with Nova Medical School, Elisabeth Herrero with European Animal Research Association (EARA) Belgium, Serban Morosan with Gircor, Valeska Stephan with Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation, Havermans, Monique with EARA Netherlands, Xavier Warot with École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL, and Hannah Hobson with UAR. We learned about openness initiatives taking place in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, and right here in the UK. Thank you to Kirk Leech with European Animal Research Association (EARA) for chairing this session, and thank you to everyone who shared with us the best practices in openness that are occurring across the globe! #Openness24

📢 COReS is starting a new seminar series in 2024 to share emerging trends on systematic reviews of animal studies. The conduct of systematic reviews to support animal research is increasing in popularity and exciting techniques are developing rapidly. During each seminar session, an expert guest speaker will provide insights into their work, showcasing specific tools, resources, and approaches. Join our 1st session with Dr. Manoj Lalu to learn more about the latest development on the reporting guideline PRISMA-Preclinical. What is the PRISMA guideline and why do we need one specific to systematic reviews in animal research? How was it developed and what will be the next steps? 🌐Find out more about the COReS seminar series here: https://lnkd.in/eWmmFCYn 📅March 28, 2024 🕔5 pm CET 🖊Register now by using the QR code below 👇 or via the official sign-up link: https://lnkd.in/ekqgqUkX #COReS #SeminarSeries #PRISMA #Preclinical #SystematicReview #3Rs

CEO & Scientific Director at Universities Federation for Animal Welfare and the Humane Slaughter Association
Humans kill animals for various reasons and the justifications for doing so can often be contentious. However, few would argue that if humans do kill animals, it should be done in a way that inflicts the absolute least pain, suffering, or distress possible. Earlier this year, UFAW collaborated with the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO to organise a meeting on Humanely Ending the Life of Animals. Held in Bern, Switzerland, and online, the meeting brought together researchers from around the world to discuss the latest developments in killing animals humanely in a range of scenarios. Topics covered included humane slaughter of livestock; control of ‘pests’ or invasive species; humane killing of laboratory animals at the end of their use in research; and depopulation of animals in emergency situations. These talks showcased recent research which could lead to significant improvements in animal welfare at the time of killing for a wide range of species. I was particularly encouraged by the large number of talks on methods for humanely killing aquatic species including decapod crustaceans. These species are increasingly widely recognised as sentient and for which humane methods of slaughter are urgently needed. There is much to do before every animal killed by humans has a humane death, but as the meeting demonstrated, progress is being made thanks to the animal welfare scientists who work on this most difficult of animal welfare issues. Most of the talks from the meeting are now freely available to view on UFAW’s YouTube channel: https://shorturl.at/Q19Yh Disseminating this kind of cutting-edge animal welfare science is central to UFAW’s mission to ensure that animal welfare science is translated into meaningful improvements in animal welfare. Further meetings in this ongoing collaboration with the FSVO are planned in the upcoming years. Stay tuned for more details - the best way to stay in touch with UFAW’s work is to sign up to receive updates from UFAW -https://lnkd.in/eUgR8NqM

Good literature searches are an integral part of planning animal research and testing. This is where hashtag #systemicreview comes in. Systemic reviews of published animal experiments are a useful aid in planning research and can also be used to extract new conclusions from experiments which have already been performed (so-called Synthesis of Evidence), thereby avoiding the need for new ones. This summer University of Zurich, in collaboration with hashtag Norecopa and the University of Bergen (UiB) are putting on a program led by experts in Systematic Review. Check out amazing program here: https://lnkd.in/eJTMxkX3 and register here: https://lnkd.in/eAW2uuUh to you learn all the steps needed to perform a systematic review of your own, including how to perform literature searches, how to manage references, how to screen abstracts, and risk of bias.
