CB insights has just released this report on the #AI readiness of different hospital systems in the US, with the usual suspects like Mayo, Intermountain, and Cleveland Clinic leading the list. I'd love to see a similar study done for Europe. From my experience working with different startups in the field, I see higher interest in France (probably also influenced by the strategic importance of #AI for the nation and the academic talent there), and Spain, as well as several Scandinavian markets, quite ahead of places like Germany or Switzerland (in spite of great innovation coming out of places like the ETH Zürich). We're so close to seeing some AI 'mini revolutions' in Scotland. If we can work together to overcome the remaining barriers - chief amongst which is money (isn't it always)and evidence - then we'd be world leaders in healthcare AI. Some creativity is required, but I'm certain NHS Scotland, The Scottish Government and our commercial partners can figure it out. Every supplier I've spoken to is willing to adopt a risk-reward financing structure based on the 'save to invest' model - which means they're willing to stand by the benefits of their product and to work collaboratively to build the required evidence. We need to get this done!!! I think we'd benefit from an AI Summit in Scotland where we bring suppliers, customers and other parts of the ecosystem together to figure out an equitable way of delivering the benefits we all know are achievable. This is an interesting article from FirstWord HealthTech about the Answer Digital approach to deploying AI. This is interesting and will help to achieve the aims from the Richards' review and the recommendations from NICE. Using this approach will help to deploy AI in clinical settings in a way that is time effective and can impact on clinical pathways in a more timely way. Doing this will allow organisations to deploy AI in a way that clinicians can then try the models and will help to build clinical trust. This will help to speed up potential benefits to patients and also in the clinical pathway time savings.
