https://lnkd.in/gmKcctE4 A great article on the extent of litter entering our waterways. While there's a good case for installing litter traps in our creeks, rivers and canals to prevent litter from entering our bays and oceans, surely taking steps to eradicate litter occurring in the first place would be a better investment.

Director, Public Works Operations @ City of Peterborough | Public Service Delivery Entrepreneur/Business Owner BOSS l Business Analytics and Telematics
Let's work together to keep Peterborough clean and green! As a community, we prioritize the safety and cleanliness of our streets, sidewalks, and green spaces. Litter not only looks bad, but it also harms our environment, animals, and is expensive to clean up. By properly disposing of waste, we can reduce litter and protect our local ecosystems, wildlife, and drinking water. Did you know that the City of Peterborough invests in waste clean-up operations in our parks, greenspaces, and streets every year? The City maintains over 350 garbage and recycling receptacles year-round, with more bins added in the summer. In 2022, the City spent $394,681 on parks garbage pickup and litter collection in parks, greenspaces, and on streets. Public Works collected 3 tonnes of orphaned waste and litter in February 2024. Additionally, we provide enhanced waste receptacle services in the downtown area through a partnership with a Downtown Business Improvement Area funded by the Public Works Operations group. Let's do our part and properly dispose of waste to keep Peterborough litter-free. Together, we can make a difference! #Peterborough #CleanCommunity #WasteReduction #ProtectOurEnvironment #litteractionplan For more information, please City of Peterborough's Litter Action Plan webpage https://lnkd.in/gCPeM9XZ.

A big part of putting roots down in Rio Rico (with the recent purchase our our building) is branching out (pun intended) and connecting with local farmers on ways we can be best utilizing every last bit of what cannot make it to people's🍊🥔 🥦 homes - and prevent it from going into a landfill! We are beyond proud to share the incredible strides our teammates Tomas and Adrian have made with our newly acquired dump truck! 🚛 Their dedication and hard work have led to an outstanding partnership with 11 new farmers in Santa Cruz County. These farmers now have the capacity to take 20 full loads of waste per week, effectively transforming how we manage waste disposal. 🌱💪 This collaboration doesn't just benefit us, but also our partners and donors. By redirecting waste away from the landfill, we are collectively saving approximately $900 per load. Let's break that down: • 20 loads per week x $900 per load = $18,000 savings per week • 52 weeks per year = $936,000 annual savings That's nearly $1 million in yearly savings for us, our partners, and our donors! 💵🙌 This is not just a financial victory, but a huge win for sustainability and our community's commitment to reducing waste. Join us in celebrating Tomas and Adrian's remarkable achievement! Their efforts exemplify our mission to innovate and collaborate for a better future. 🌍✨ #Teamwork #Innovation #Sustainability #CommunityImpact #AzFBNPride

🗑Do you know where your trash goes? Our Trash Lives Next to this Community is a recent podcast episode from The Broadside by Anisa Khalifa and Charlie Shelton-Ormond from North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC that highlights stories from the community of Snow Hill. The residents of Snow Hill, once a thriving Black community in Sampson County North Carolina, live next to the largest landfill in the state. It covers approximately 1400 acres and although some waste is prohibited (flammable materials, factory farm waste, tires, vehicles, etc.), some residents have witnessed these items being dumped there. Though the landfill currently complies with its permits, some argue the laws are not strong enough and do not account for cumulative impacts. For example, in addition to the landfill, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports is the second largest methane emitter among landfills across the U.S., there are many factory-scale livestock production facilities in the area. And high levels of PFAS have been found in wells around the landfill. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has been brought in to test for PFAS and drinking water safety, and methane capture technology, which would generate electricity from the methane emitted from the landfill, has been proposed. However, many residents, who protested the siting of the landfill from the beginning, see these efforts as greenwashing and want the landfill closed. It is not projected to be full for another 20 years. Many ways to collect litter but 1️⃣ common goal of a Maryland free of trash and litter❗️ Systemic change at the source is why we are advocating for Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging! ✅Reduces Volume ✅Increases Sustainability ✅Increases Recyclability Read about the many mitigation strategies for litter. ⬇️
The flow of litter to the Anacostia River—particularly plastic bottles—is as stark as it is in many tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. D.C. leaders and various nonprofits work to reduce the trash as best they can. They rely on a variety of tactics like trash traps, skimmer boats, laws and regulations—even volunteers who pay for their kayak rental in the litter they pick up. Learn more about these efforts for #PlasticFreeJuly.
