Reliability is inherent... it is built in at the design phase. At inception major decisions are made that can impact your asset reliability. We have to accept that the design of assets and equipment is often constrained. Budget, footprint, accessibility, operating context, maintainability, ergonomics, power requirement, health and safety.... the list is extensive. The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) has a lot on their plate. Conceptualising, specifying and then building assets to fit your operating context perfectly. It is little wonder that some components may not suit the end user's application. We can fail quickly if we assume the OEM fully understands the end users needs. Then when the button is pressed no one thought about the maintenance and overall care package, early failures crop up and everyone turns to the Maintenance Department to 'make it work' when it's the inherent design or specs that are the root cause... sticking plasters are duly applied! This can be avoided with the involvement of operators, maintainers and even consultants like myself, avoiding those poor specification choices and if not at least mitigating and reducing the possibility of failure. The PF Curve is essential for monitoring #machinecondition over time, enabling the effective application of #predictive techniques. It represents the timeline between the point of potential failure (P) and the point of functional failure (F). By understanding this timeline, maintenance teams can identify when faults or defects can first be detected and when the equipment will ultimately fail. This strategy allows for fault detection at early stages, preventing their progression to catastrophic failures or breakdowns. Understanding the PF curve gives maintenance teams the power to increase machine #reliability and extend asset life cycles, resulting in efficient and strategic #maintenancemanagement.
