The grasses and other vegetation in Canadian grasslands absorb CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. This process converts CO2 into organic carbon, which is used to build plant tissues. Grasslands have extensive root systems that penetrate deep into the soil. These roots transfer carbon from the atmosphere into the soil, where it can be stored for long periods. The organic matter from decaying roots contributes to soil organic carbon, enhancing the soil's carbon storage capacity. Proper grazing management by beef cattle helps maintain healthy grasslands.
