Ever look up at a construction site and wonder, "What the heck is that?" If you happen to be walking by 333 East 38th St in New York City, the answer is a construction hoist and common tower platform! A hoist is a temporary, high-capacity elevator on the exterior of a building used during construction. Before permanent elevators— or stairs, for that matter— are finished in a building, a hoist is the main way for workers and materials to reach floors high above street level. Years ago, Platform Solutions asked us to design a custom modular system allowing up to six hoist cars to serve a single "common" platform. These towers can triple vertical access to a job site using the same number of building ties and curtain wall openings as traditional layouts. This reduces downtime for multiple trades, saving time and money as building heights increase. Usually, hoists are perpendicular to the building face, but in this project, the common tower rotated the hoist 90 degrees to optimize space on a tight construction site. South Station Tower's recent feature in Engineering News-Record New England shows a glimpse into the design behind the 51-story mixed-use tower atop one of New England's busiest transportation hubs. "Banker Steel, working with McNamara • Salvia, Structural Engineers, made use of zipper trusses, which allow extremely heavy trusses to be put into place in more manageable sections. The sections, in turn, allowed for more bolts and less welding, saving money and time." 3-Storey Modular Residential Building, Southport, QLD. In the heart of Southport, QLD, we took on the challenge of constructing a 3-storey residential modular building on a 134 sqm block with a 5.0m frontage, hemmed in by occupied residential structures in a bustling built-up area. A unique endeavor that required innovative solutions and meticulous planning. Our Contribution: Our team was entrusted with the design, inspection, and structural certifications for the steel and timber roof, floor, and wall framing. To overcome restricted site access, these frames were crafted offsite and then seamlessly craned into place, ensuring a smooth and efficient construction process. Remarkable Achievements: 📉 Reduced overall construction cost by approximately 15% compared to traditional in situ construction. ⌛ Slashed construction time by an impressive 3 months, showcasing our commitment to efficiency. Unique Project Attributes: 🛠️ Adoption of light gauge steel chassis for modules, minimising steel quantity and construction costs. 🏗️ Integration of chassis as part of the structure, reducing material consumption and handling time. 🔄 Strategic combination of timber and steel design, mitigating supply chain difficulties and material shortages. From Cape Hatteras National Seashore: Yesterday, the first three trucks of scaffolding were unloaded at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse work site. Unloading and erecting the massive scaffold---both interior and exterior---has begun! Flatbed trucks loaded with the scaffolding components will continue to arrive in upcoming weeks. When completed, the scaffold will have 28 landings and an elevator to carry materials and historic restoration elements to any level necessary. It will remain up until the restoration is complete. Like with any project, however, some adaptable engineering came in handy with unanticipated needs. To protect historical integrity of the beacon, the scaffolding is unable to be anchored to the building like usual. This meant that engineers needed to figure out how to safely design a 200-foot stand-alone structure! https://lnkd.in/emJug2Gs
