Had a great time hanging out with some of my college roommates this past weekend. While there, I had the opportunity to speak with some University of Massachusetts Amherst students. We talked about internships, recruiting, grad school and so much more. The best part was seeing how engaged they were. I could already see some #futureleaders and can't wait to start #recruiting them! Today, we welcome a new class of summer interns. These college students will spend their time this summer in various areas of JEA, including engineering, project accounting, finance and more. We look forward to them learning and helping us become the greatest utility in the nation. We wish them bright careers and maybe a 20+ year career at JEA, like many interns before them. 😀 What words of wisdom would you share with our summer interns? #JEAIntern

My DMs have kinda popped off on the topic of interns "Where can I get free interns too?" "How do you find interns?" "Can you hook me up?" First: *They're not FREE* They’re paid above national living wage (which is higher than minimum wage) Second: There's a world of early stage career talent out there. And IMO you have to take the time to properly review their CVs, be inclusive in your recruitment & onboarding. Plus working with interns requires your time & investment to train, support, lead, feedback to and develop them. IMO it's not a "how can I squeeze this intern resource dry" situation. It's a "how can I support these early careers people to develop their skills, feel supported as they learn, fail fast and tap into their potential?" Third: Most unis have internship programmes. They're all set up differently, with different criteria, timeframes, eligibility, processes. And some are part-funded. _____________________________ Big thanks to Kate who helped me navigate the first steps to working with interns and put me in touch with University of Strathclyde who have part-funded two of Gut Wealth’s current interns

Ivy League schools exist in the imagination as places to search for one's calling, whether it is to become a playwright, a cancer researcher or some other surprising possibility. Yet today, the finance, consulting and tech industries are gobbling up more and more graduates. Corporate recruiting now shapes campus life from the moment students step into it. Twenty years ago, summer internships might have been secured just a few months in advance, says the head of Harvard's careers office. These days, banking internships start the hiring process two years out.

When large firms and enterprises welcome undergraduate interns, it is not only that interns learn from the organization; but also the organization learn from interns. It is more to an exchange of knowledge and experience with an opportunity of getting exposed to different mindsets for both parties. It is important that organizations make sure to provide proper intern programs that allows undergraduates to learn about professional life, career paths, different working domains and subdomains; and to allow their existing human capital to learn from those interns who come with an international level of exposure to new academic scholar methods.

At IALR, we invest in internships by helping employers create successful programs and bringing interns to our campus every summer. In our experience, those interns may come back to fill - and succeed in - full-time roles later on! In the past few years, IALR has hired three former interns into full-time roles. ✅ Lleyton Barber, MBA, Contracts & Financial Reporting Specialist. Lleyton worked as a summer intern with our Economic Development division in 2022 before joining in a full-time role this fall. ✅ Mitchell Doss, Value Chain Coordinator. After attending the Academy for Engineering & Technology, completing multiple internships with the Applied Research division and working as a Virginia Tech research specialist on our campus for multiple years, Mitchell took his position in July. ✅ Cassidy Pruitt, Research and Communications Analyst with the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance. Cassidy worked as a summer communications intern in 2019 and then joined IALR as an employee in 2023. Hear more of their stories here: https://ow.ly/5UnV50Uv4Z0 (This podcast was published in February before Lleyton and Mitchell had accepted full-time roles with the organization.
