Today, I celebrate the TRANSFORMATIVE POWER of COLLABORATION.  Since September 2023, I've had the honor of coaching a team of 24 individuals in Topeka, Kansas on how to use #innovation methodologies as a catalyst for reducing #homelessness in their city. As is the case with any project related to homelessness, the silver bullet fix does not exist, yet the pressure to have that fix as quick as possible weighs large. And the emotion felt, by all stakeholders, is intense. As one wise Council member aptly put it this past week, "As a community, we're all reading the same book, but we’re in different chapters and we all need to get on the same page." This past week was a HUGE STEP FORWARD in getting the community of Topeka, Kansas on the same page. I’m celebrating that four ideation sessions were conducted throughout the community this past week, each designed to share some of the core findings of the team’s discovery research and to engage key stakeholders of the community in co-creating solutions to reduce homelessness in Topeka. People who are experiencing homelessness, the social agencies that support them, the general public, and city and county leaders all participated. We’re emerging with hundreds of ideas that fall along a spectrum of short- and long-term solutions. I’m celebrating that a spirit of collaboration and unity is beginning to emerge across the community. It’s easy to come into ideation sessions, like those that happened past week, with an edge….and many did. But, as one community member said in the wrap up, “I had expected to come out of this meeting angry tonight. But I am not angry. There is work to do, but I know there is commitment to do it.” Bottom line, forward momentum was achieved last week. I’m celebrating that momentum and the core and auxiliary teams of the Homeless Initiative that are diligently showing up week after week to forge this new way of working in the community. It was an honor to have the National Criminal Justice Association feature Untapped Solutions on their podcast! 🎙️✨ We had the opportunity to discuss how Untapped Solutions is transforming the case management landscape, offering state agencies new ways to collaborate with us. We also shared detailed analytics on key issues like case worker fatigue 😓, the lack of technology in many nonprofit settings 🖥️, and the unfortunate reality that in the in the U.S thier is only 1 client-facing staff member for every 500+ people who need services. Since founding Stack'd in 2015, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with remarkable NFPs (Not-for-Profits) across Alberta. These organizations, led by passionate and purpose-driven leaders, have been transforming their communities—and we’ve been honored to play a role in helping them create meaningful impact for their stakeholders. Over the years, we’ve supported NFPs in tackling some of their most significant opportunities and challenges, including: 1. Shaping new strategic directions and plans. 2. Reducing reliance on donor and grant funding by developing social enterprise strategies. 3. Redesigning organizational structures to maximize impact. 4. Merging like-minded organizations and supporting them with their post-merger integration efforts. 5. Enhancing leadership team health and effectiveness. We’re incredibly proud of the value we’ve helped create, but now, we’re taking it a step further. I’m excited to announce that we are making NFPs a core area of focus for our firm. This means dedicated resources, specialized service offerings, and an even greater commitment to helping these organizations thrive. Housing Stabilization Hackathon! Kevin Finn and Laura Randall-Tepe and their respective organizations are really doing something special here! This is not easy to pull off. I should know...about 6-7 years ago I was pulling together a hackathon with Centric Consulting, University of Cincinnati, United Way and the City of Cincinnati to work towards understanding and eliminating the problem of child hunger in our community. It never came together - too many moving parts on a "side project" budget. Getting access to good data is key and was difficult as well. We had a great team, but it just never progressed to something that could be delivered for the community. I continue to regret that we never got that one over the goal line... Flywheel Social Enterprise Hub and Strategies to End Homelessness, Inc. are driven to make this hackathon a success. "Empowering Communities: Time Over Money at KISS Cooperative" Over the weekend, I had the honor of joining the KISS Cooperative board at their annual retreat—a strategic gathering to chart the course for the upcoming year. Beforehand, I was asked by the president to lead a #workshop, guiding the team in creating personas and refining their target audiences. It was an incredible experience filled with enthusiasm and #collaboration. The cooperative believes in the power of community. KISS, an acronym for "Keep it small and simple," embodies the commitment to fostering genuine connections and support among neighbors. In the town where I live, KISS Cooperative was founded a few years ago to be one’s go-to for supported neighborhood assistance, where giving and receiving help is seamless, uncomplicated, and impactful. As contributing and receiving members, #volunteers receive a time record for their efforts, allowing them to reclaim, save, or even gift their hours when they need a helping hand. The mission is to provide timely and enduring support to people of all generations. Whether it's a one-time assistance or ongoing support, everyone is proudly operating under the Foundation KISS, as part of a network of around 20 regional cooperatives, collectively working towards making a positive impact in their #communities. In our workshop, we delved deep into the diverse KISS community, prioritizing target groups, creating #personas, and developing interview guides. We brought remarkable clarity to the profiles, setting the stage for crafting tailored communications in the next phase. For me it was a highly intensive, interesting, and stimulating afternoon, that concluded with a delightful dinner and in-depth discussions about the cooperative's future. I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this insightful workshop and gain a profound understanding of KISS's impactful work. It's truly inspiring to witness the abundance of community support, and I'm proud to be part of this initiative. The Little BIG Foundation's recent research has unveiled some eye-opening insights into our neighbourhood dynamics when a Little BIG community is fostered. 🔍 In just 12 months, there has been an 18% increase in people in the Summer Hill Little BIG community confidently saying they know their neighbours by name. 💙 The study also revealed that 59% of individuals feel they have strong enough relationships with their neighbours to rely on them for assistance, such as bringing in groceries or lending a helping hand in times of need (compared to 48% nationally). This speaks volumes about the untapped potential for building a supportive and tight-knit community. Remember, those friendly hellos over the fence or a simple act of kindness all contribute to the fabric of a stronger, more resilient community. I have learnt significant lessons in the past months of actively working with underserved communities and engaging with stakeholders. It's all about standing in the gap with empathy, leading change in a collaborative approach, and prioritising genuine human connections. Empathy has to be the guiding force across all sectors and, most especially, in working in nonprofits. It shows how we stay present, listen to the people, and understand their unique challenges in the communities as well as acting with compassion. It’s about building bridges and creating opportunities, ensuring everyone feels seen and empowered in the journey toward positive change.
