Building world class C-Suite and D-Suite senior leadership teams for some of the most the most exciting established and emergent technology businesses in the UK and Europe.
I'm sure we are all familiar with the saying re never assuming (yes, that one) so I thought I'd heed the advice. I'm seeking a sales leader. I thought of two candidates who would be superb but conscious their careers have moved on to Managing Director and General Manager respectively, so I approached both with a 'look, you're probably not going to be interested - but……' (I know, that's an assumption right there) and both responded along the lines of 'you know what Andy? I am interested. I'm so sick of being pulled in a thousand directions and stressing over audits / accounts / insurance / landlords / premises / inventory etc etc. Just give me a clearly defined role with a clear mission objective'. There's a lesson in there I'm sure. Have you reflected similarly over your career at times? #Recruitment #HiringProcess #JobSearch #executivesearch

"Building and Leading Successful Teams: Championing Loss Prevention, Mitigation, and Management for Business Excellence"
Question for the Loss Prevention professionals: Who else, in the Loss Prevention side of retail, is realizing that companies want Operational Managers who can learn Loss Prevention instead of Loss Prevention Managers who know Operations? I know Loss Prevention is an ever changing field but it seems all your Loss Prevention experience gets you no where with the current Regional/District level Loss Prevention positions in companies currently. *For those who have seen this are you changing careers now or hanging on?! Just curious. *If you have changed careers what are you doing now with all your Loss Prevention experience (not Law Enforcement). I don’t know what else to do but Loss Prevention but it seems like a diminishing field now. I need ideas on career options💡 #questionforlossprevention #lp #retail #newcareeroptions #lossprevention

Empowering individuals and communities to realize and exercise universal freedom through acquisition and application of knowledge
Here is a nugget of wisdom that a person I was interviewing gifted me. This happened 3 decades ago. I was young, a National Commercial Manager in the Sales system in an FMCG and was hiring a Commercial Manager to be part of my team. The person I was meeting was very competent, well qualified, had good credentials, accomplishments to speak of and had a pleasing personality. I liked that person - every question that I had was responded to well and it was a very engaging conversation. To me, everything seemed perfect, except for a niggling thought : Is this person not too soft and amiable ? Will this person be able to manage the Commercial operations in a FMCG environment, where the Sales guys try to call the shots, known to be wanting things done in their way, are too demanding and prone to taking chances with the rules and SOPs etc. ?( My biases at that time). Will this person be able to support them and yet manage to have commercial and accounting controls in place ? I was in 2 minds. Troubled. I decided to quiz him. I asked him " Look, I really like you from all angles. I am going to be direct with you. You don't seem to have the aggression in you to manage the Sales system. I am a little concerned. What do you have to say?" The person smiled. I waited. " Sir, I know what you mean. I don't need to be aggressive. I am capable of being assertive. No one can get past me by being aggressive." The response stunned me. I had learnt my lesson and he cleared my mind about the attribute that was most needed in the candidate and weeded our my own bias. No further words were needed. The person had opened my mind and convinced me that the right person for the role was sitting across the table. It was my turn to smile, shake hands and close the hiring process. We worked together for many years and together as a large team along with other equally talented Commercial Managers, we created some magic and brought about many forward looking changes. THAT person today is holding a global role in an MNC and doing excellently. Why am I not surprised?😊
