Spending everyday focused on the obesity and GLP-1 agonist market, there is no shortage of trend-breaking phenomenon to be found. Here's one I keep thinking about... Approximately 50% of patients discontinue their GLP-1 agonist treatment, but only 3.2% switch #GLP1 treatments, according to claims data from IRIS by Real Chemistry, our insights-as-a-service intelligence platform. Demand is at an all time high, so where are the discontinuing patients going? We’re seeing that cost, coverage, and supply challenges are creating confusion and frustration for consumers, driving them to a booming “gray market.” In this gray market, medical spas and online providers like Henry Meds, Amble, and Ro are providing compounded GLP-1 meds (due to FDA-documented supply shortages) at perceived lower costs and added convenience. Their marketing often claims they are saving consumers hundreds, if not thousands. But we’re seeing that in reality, people may be paying 2-3 times more at their local medspa or with an online company than if they got their GLP-1 agonist medications from their #healthcare provider, like they do with any other Rx product. The message to life sciences is clear: perception is powerful, and this gray market is creating blind spots for #healthcare stakeholders. I have said it before, and I will happily say it again: GLP-1 drugs need clinically validated companion apps in order to secure the best outcomes for patients and avoid bankrupting the healthcare system. But I will take it one step further: Just as GLP-1 drugs are forecasted to have a bigger impact on US GDP than AI - and that's saying something - I think a companion app for optimal GLP-1 use and sustainable lifestyle change results has the potential to become the next really big company within health. But it needs to be done right. And be 'bullet-proof'. On the other hand, if that can be managed, the opportunity to build an unbeatable moat is huge. Are GLP-1 products an opportunity or a threat to digital health companion apps? Obviously you would think they are an opportunity, and I am inclined to think this is indeed the case. On the other hand I am also very conscious about peoples perceptions as to what a drug can do on its own, and it seems like the GLP-1 products are starting to get seen as a magic 'silver bullet' that solves everything on it's own. Which it clearly doesn't - but perception is often king. Irrespective of this specific class of drugs I think there is a wider conversation to be had about the best and most efficient role of companion apps to drugs, when it comes to ensuring better health outcomes. When we solve this puzzle, I think we will start seeing a massive uptake in interest in digital health products from both patients and prescribing physicians.
