Who started Butternut Box and why? Butternut Box fresh dog food was started in 2014 in London by 2 entrepreneurs and friends Kev and Dave working in banking at the time, who began to make fresh dog food in their kitchen. Their vision was inspired by an improvement in health in Dave’s family dog Rudie when fed home cooked meals. From humble beginnings where they would make and deliver the food themselves, their company grew to such a point where in 2023, Butternut Box received an investment of  £280 million pounds to expand their range of fresh foods into Europe!   How sustainable is the production of fresh dog food? When you consider that the meat-based dog food industry runs off the fact that it is sustainable as the ‘byproducts’ of the livestock animals are used in pet food ie liver, kidneys, spleen, heart, tongue, fat, blood – ie the parts of the animal that we do not eat which ensures there is no waste….but this still amounts to the meat-based dog food industry having an enormous environmental impact compared to plant-based dog food. Now consider using ‘human grade’ fresh ingredients in a dog food where you compete with the food that we eat, including fish, lamb, pork, beef and chicken…it gives a small dog fed on this food with each meal, a greater carbon footprint than an adult person as people do not eat meat with each meal. During the holidays, we prepare meals to celebrate the occasion and partake with our closest relative and friends. Of course, let us not forget our beloved pets who can also share the feast this holiday season! Among these treats is this recipe from Coco and Pod that we want to share with you for your pets! What you need: • 1 cup organic coconut oil, divided into two half cups • ½ cup smooth peanut butter • ¼ cup of carob powder (or a handful of melted carob drops if you prefer) • Dog treat silicone moulds of your choice (dog bone or paw print) • Heat-proof bowl • Saucepan • Wooden spoon Instructions: 1. Half fill a small-medium saucepan with water and bring to the boil. 2. In a heat-proof bowl, add the divided portion of your coconut oil with the peanut butter. 3. Reduce the heat of the saucepan to low. Place the bowl over the top of the saucepan and slowly melt the coconut oil and peanut butter mixture. 4. To create the layered effect like we have, half-fill your moulds with the carob liquid. 5. When finished, even out the mixture in the moulds by giving them a slight tap. 6. Remove any excess mixture on top of the moulds with a butter knife or spatula. 7. Refrigerate until set (usually around 30 mins). 8. While the first mixture is setting, repeat the process above and melt together the remaining coconut oil with the carob powder (or carob drops if using) over the stove top. 9. Once the carob moulds are set, add the next layer by pouring the peanut butter liquid over the top. 10. Tap moulds again to ensure the mixture is evenly spread. Refrigerate again until completely set before removing treats from the moulds. Keep refrigerated or frozen.
