This is due to something called the lock-up period, a crucial but lesser-known aspect of IPOs. The lock-up period is typically 90 to 180 days after the IPO, during which insiders (employees, founders, and early investors) are restricted from selling their shares. While retail investors can trade the stock immediately, insiders must wait. Would you have bought the Reddit IPO the day it went public? Should YOU invest in an #IPO? In investing we learn Risk = Reward, This is a principle of investing we cover in the Do Re Mi sequence of chapter 6. When you look for the riskiest investments, IPOs come to mind. An IPO or Initial Public Offering is the first time the public can purchase shares of what was formerly a private company. On the first day of trading people rush out to buy this unpredictable stock in the hopes that from the magic number the IPO was set to start is the bottom and only upside comes next. Well, if we know anything about investing, nothing only goes UP. In fact, in the first days or weeks after an IPO, the stock price will often fall BELOW the original IPO price after the first day of hype. The sequence goes – Ding Ding Ding the bell is open and the price is off and running for a few hours and then the excitement wanes and people who were chasing the up begin to see the down, many of which are ‘retail’ or average investors who will now be eating the losses as the stock falls from a first day high, 20-30% below even the original list price. Take social media platform Reddit IPO as an example. It opened at $34 IPO and went on a run, skyrocketing up to almost $75 per share! Many novice investors thought ‘we have to jump in before it goes to the moon!’ Buying shares in the $70 range only to see the stock fall 40% in the next few months and all of these young / emotional investors holding the bag of losses. These IPOs are the most uncertain because they have no track record and most of the information about these companies have been kept private up until the point they decide they want to turn public. While there is excitement in an IPO and a great story for someone who can say ‘I bought Amazon on their IPO date’. There is a reason Money Vehicle preaches the BE AVERAGE =INDEX philosophy. Experts are trying to predict where these stocks will go without accuracy and we are not just trying to churn a profit on day 3 of the IPO but Year 3 or even Year 13. When you chase an IPO you take on great risk of losing money and that is something we want to avoid. Be Average may lose some here and there as well, but it will not have the cliffs that chasing an IPO does. Show people you Speak Money and Be Average. Resourceful Automobile’s recent IPO grabbed a lot of attention, with bids reaching ₹4,800 crores, even though they were only trying to raise ₹12 crores. But despite all the excitement, the stock dropped 40% within just 10 days after it got listed. This shows how unpredictable SME IPOs can be, and it’s a good reminder that it’s important to look at the company’s real value and not just get caught up in the hype.
Q. “After listing,IPO allotted can be sold after how many days? ” A. There are usually no restrictions on regular IPO investors. Investors who apply for an IPO and get allocation can sell immediately after the stock lists on the stock market. A pre-IPO session starts when the markets open at 9:15 am. This goes on till 10:00 am. After that, investors can freely sell their IPO shares. There may be some categories of investors like anchor investors, proprietors, etc. on whom there are selling restrictions.
