🤜🤛 Calix’s Zero Emissions Steel TechnologY (ZESTY) is a game-changer for sustainable steel production, combining efficient hydrogen use and electric heating! Competitive costs: A ZESTY demonstration plant is expected to produce near-zero emissions hot briquetted iron (HBI) from low-grade iron ore for ~AUD$630–800 per tonne, competitive with current carbon-intensive methods. Significant emissions reduction: reduces CO₂ emissions from iron ore reduction to near zero, tackling 80-85% of the steel industry's emissions. Proven technology: successful ore testing program with commercial-grade results for a variety of ores. 🔗 Because Mars is for quitters, Calix is redefining the future of steel production with ZESTY: https://lnkd.in/g6NSKUsZ #Marsisforquitters

How can existing refinery assets be used to transition to lower carbon fuels and #decarbonization? This topic is animating many discussions in the refining industry, including within technology licensors such as Axens. Most refineries worldwide are equipped with FCC units. These units have always been considered a wonderful "bin" to process highly contaminated feedstocks such as atmospheric or vacuum oil residue. It has a high tolerance to impurities, high viscosity feedstocks and liquid with low stability making it a perfect candidate to process exotic feedstocks as: 🌿 - bio-crude oil from pyrolysis 🗑 - waste plastic oil from pyrolysis These feedstocks are potentially corrosive at high temperatures and will be subject to polymerize and plug pieces of equipment. To tackle these challenges, BASF, Axens and Technip Energies have written this very informative paper proposing pragmatic solutions and recommendations. If you are ready to repurpose your FCC to an energy transition process unit, have a look Nice work! Guillaume VINCENT, Stefano Riva, Francy Barrios, Francois Dubois, Scott Golczynski!

Dive into our latest Direct from Midrex (DFM) tech article, "Safe Shipment of HBI". Building upon our 2021 DFM article about the HBI C-Flex project, Chris Barrington explores the recent developments from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that have far-reaching implications for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) transport. Since we introduced the project in 2021, HBI C-Flex has transitioned from concept to reality with a defined scope, scientific partnerships, and crucial financial support from the EU Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). This article also briefly discusses our Safe H-DRI project, a strategic initiative focused on rail/barge transport in response to global shifts in the industry. Power Metal Resources PLC (AIM:POW) CEO Sean Wade speaks to Proactive's Stpehen Gunnion about the strategic acquisition of a 75% stake in GSA Environmental (GSAe), a company specialising in extracting critical metals from waste products like fly ash and heavy fuel oil ash. The venture is particularly focused on residues from electricity generation and spent catalysts, promising to transform them into environmentally friendly residues while extracting valuable metals essential for the energy transition. The move is seen as a departure from Power Metal's traditional focus on incubating early-stage mining opportunities, aiming instead to provide a sustainable revenue stream to reduce dependency on capital markets. #AIM #POW Watch at #Proactive #ProactiveInvestors https://lnkd.in/e6g9KA4k

The Calix Limited #ZESTY iron making process is another of the developing methods that can be used to #decarbonize #iron production (the low key true win for the steel indusrty). The ability to use iron fines (a waste byproduct) adds to it's sustainable story. The only caveats to the above statement is that the system is built in a region with ample #RenewableEnergy and that "low CO2 lime" is used in the smelting to purify the low grade iron ore to be utilized in an #EAF. The process of making lime (#calcination) is an emission intensive process which falls into the hard to abate category. Confirmation of the low emission production methodology would be critical for the EAF stream. #Steel #Sustainability #SustainableSteel #GreenSteel #Innovation #Steelcon

ReMFra makes a step towards CO2-reduced treatment of steelmaking by-products 🌍 👏 Within the frame of the ReMFra project (“Recovering metals and mineral fraction from steelmaking residues”, Grant Agreement no. 101058362) funded within the #cleansteel Partnership of #horizon Europe, developments to reach a low-carbon steelmaking dust treatment made a big step 😀 As part of the ReMFra part RecoDust (selective recovery of iron and zinc from steelmaking dusts), the admixture of 10% H2 to the standard fuel and reducing agent (natural gas) was successfully tested in a pilot smelting campaign by the project partners #montanuniversitaet Leoben (Chair of Thermal Processing Technology, MUL), #voestalpine Stahl, and #K1MET 👍 The picture below shows the safety-related storage area of the H2 supply in a gas cylinder compartment outside the technical center of the Chair of Thermal Processing Technolog (copyright MUL). Stable process conditions were reached and an excellent zinc removal/separation from the iron fraction is expected. We are proud of this important milestone within the ReMFra process development and keep you updated about the further progress 📢

After a year's-long construction saga, TMX finally delivered its first barrels in late May. The milestone marks a new chapter for Western Canadian markets, with the significant expansion unlocking new westbound capacity to Pacific Basin markets. With TMX operations still in the very early stages, many questions remain. How quickly and to what magnitude will TMX volumes ramp up? Will the Port of Vancouver be able to accommodate the necessary uptick in shipments to support a highly utilized Trans Mountain system? How will volumes on other routes out of Western Canada be affected? Wood Mackenzie’s unmatched, real-time supply chain monitoring provides clarity on all of these questions as TMX re-shapes the Canadian crude landscape in the coming months. We have added TMX to our coverage of real-time pipeline monitoring as a combined system with the legacy Trans Mountain line. Our proprietary monitoring of Western Canadian crude storage, waterborne loadings at Westridge, Canadian production forecasts, and flows along other key outlets (including Mainline, Keystone, and crude-by-rail) will be crucial in understanding how Canadian trade flows develop.
