Sometimes, life is just not fair! Whilst this is a sad fact of life, you still have the choice about how to deal with it.
Let me tell you a true story.
Last weekend, my son picked up an injury while playing rugby – falling awkwardly onto his shoulder after a tackle. It hurt, and he came off but not until he had taken the conversion. He felt rotten, but didn’t want to miss a trip to watch Sale Sharks play Harlequinns that afternoon. So, off he went with Dad. They both enjoyed the match, Sharks won!
On the way home, they thought that it might be wise to check out the injury before going to the team physio on Tuesday. So, Sunday evening was spent in A&E.
Good job they did!
He’s fractured his collar bone.
He’s going to miss out on playing in the rugby final, playing in the tournament on the rugby tour and the beginning of the eventing season (if you know, you know!).
It’s not fair!
He has worked so hard training, practicing, working on fitness. He’s gutted and he’s in pain.
On Sunday, he just wanted to feel miserable and sorry for himself. I don’t blame him!
On Monday, we started to re-plan his spring.
Competing will be pushed back.
He is the only member of his team that plays his position. He plays No. 10, which means he takes the kicks. Nobody else in the team plays at that position. BUT he could help his team by going to team training on Tuesday and helping the person who is going to step up and replace him. So that is what he is going to do.
He can go on tour and cheer his team on. So that is what he is going to do.
He can’t go to the eventing competitions that he’d planned and he can’t keep his horse fit. But he can re-plan his season and he can delegate fitness work. So that is what he’s going to do. (Guess what I’m going to be doing??)
He can work on his core strength, if not other areas of fitness. So that is what he is going to do.
Often, in business, we get thrown a curved ball. We need to remember that we have choices:
· Fight it, and carry on as normal.
· Flex with it, and make an opportunity out of an obstacle.
· Give up, feel sorry for yourself, and achieve nothing.
The best option is always the middle one.
But often, it is hard to let go of long cherished goals. Especially if you have worked hard and feel that you can almost touch them. Circumstances may snatch them away. But it is a bit like grief – it is important to recognise the disappointment, acknowledge the pain, and find a new path.
This is resilience.
Vital for sportspeople and businesspeople.
