🌍 The Crucial Role of Soil Conservation in Indonesia 🌍 Soil conservation is vital for sustainability due to its impact on 🌱 ecosystem health, 🥗 food security, 🌊 water control, and 🌿 carbon emission reduction. Degraded soil hampers plant growth, threatens food production, increases flood risks, and raises greenhouse gas emissions. In Indonesia, soil degradation is driven by 🌳 deforestation, ⛏️ mining, and land-use changes for agriculture. These activities lead to topsoil loss, erosion, and soil quality decline. Efforts to combat this include 🌲 rehabilitating degraded lands with local vegetation, applying agroforestry practices, and implementing water management techniques like terracing and small dams. Education programs are also crucial to raise awareness and improve conservation practices. These initiatives have restored forests, boosted agricultural productivity, and reduced erosion. Enhanced community participation and commitment to sustainability are also notable outcomes. However, poor soil conservation poses serious risks: 🚨 food insecurity, infrastructure damage, increased flood and landslide risks, water quality deterioration, and accelerated climate change. Although as a Norwegian I might be a bit biased on this. But since the commitment of the reforestation fund and until today, Indonesia has gone from bad to great. And most of this has to do with Indonesia itself, while the fund has been one of many supporting factors. It’s estimated that Indonesia with in 1-2 years will reach 0 deforestation and from then on hopefully reforestation. Another success story for Indonesia. Being a public policy student has opened a lot of doors for me in terms of thinking and observing things. My recent visit to Batam, Indonesia highlighted the country's impressive efforts to protect nature. Key initiatives are transforming Indonesia's forests into net carbon sinks by 2030, as part of its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). 4 Major Takeaways 1. Strong Government Leadership: Provincial governments are integrating environmental conservation into development plans 2. Decentralized Forest Management: Forest Management Units (FMUs) are balancing economic and environmental priorities, benefiting over 110,000 community members. 3. Land Tenure Security: Projects are securing land rights for Indigenous Peoples, protecting forests and improving livelihoods. 4. Tailored Local Solutions: Customised strategies are ensuring sustainable forest management across different regions. These efforts not only reduce emissions but also enhance community livelihoods and protect biodiversity. ADB and the Strategic Climate Fund #partnered in 2016 to assist the Government of Indonesia to revive its forest through the Community-Focused Investments to Address Deforestation and Forest Degradation Project. The forest is life to the residents of Kapuas Hulu and Sintang districts of West Kalimantan province, Indonesia. 63% of their communities rely on the forest for livelihood. Many of the residents are poor with an average daily income of $1.71. The two supported Indonesia’s Forest Investment Program, which aims to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) in the Kapuas Hulu and Sintang districts. The project seeks to achieve twin goals: reduce greenhouse gas or GHG emissions and provide livelihood to the communities. They pursued these goals while ensuring that women are included, not just as beneficiaries but as partners in the entire process. https://lnkd.in/gNiyi7fJ

Here at #baringa, we are privileged in the work we do helping our clients direct billions of dollars 💲 💲 💲 into accelerating the energy transition. We often get to work on high-impact, clean-energy mega-projects which avoid emitting millions of tons of CO2 📉 But sometimes it is the smaller projects we work on which have as much, if not more, impact. The latest sustainability report https://lnkd.in/esb5SsBX from East African Breweries PLC (EABL), Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) and Uganda Breweries Limited, subsidiaries of Diageo, gives one such example. We helped our client undertake the initial feasibility study for converting the fossil fuel-fired 🏭 boilers in the breweries in #Kenya and #Uganda to burn agricultural residue biomass. As well as reducing CO2 emission by 95% (42kt), the wider social benefits of the conversion are significant: - Local farmers 👩🏿🌾 are earning extra cash by selling agricultural residues like rice husks, macadamia husks, or coffee husks that would otherwise go to waste. - Upgrading the aging fossil fuel burners with new biomass burner technology will help improve air quality 🍃 around the Tusker brewery in Nairobi, the UPL brewery in Kampala and the Kisumu brewery by Lake Victoria. - And finally, this project is an example of how companies of all sizes worldwide 🌍 can find the right combination of low-carbon technologies that fits their specific needs, creates economic and social value and make material real-world reductions in their own, direct, Scope 1 emissions.
