Our 2023 Research Report is now published 🤗 PIADS CDT represents a unique cross-geographic collaboration between Queen's University Belfast, University of Glasgow and the Irish Photonic Integration Centre, uniting a diverse cohort of talented students and a network of pioneering industry sponsors to address the opportunities that arise at the intersection of photonic integration and advanced data storage technologies. This academic year marks a significant milestone as our tenth cohort of students joins the PIADS CDT family to advance scientific knowledge through innovative PhD and EngD research. We recognise that effective personal and professional development is as unique as one's talents, passions, and aspirations, and capitalising on these differences is essential to creating the diversely skilled workforce that will be the future of photonics in the UK and beyond. The Leibniz PhD Network published a survey on 829 PhD candidates. Of course, we looked into our favourite topic: mental health! In the graphical summary here, you see that if PhD candidates are working more than 50h/week, 32% show moderate to severe depression 🫠 And more than half of the participants work more than 40h/week, while only 20% took their complete 26-30 vacation days. In the report you find that of all participants 45-49% reported mild to high depressive and anxiety symptoms 🤯 Unfortunately, they did not check for burnout. These results fit to other publications. What’s really bad: 60% are not aware of any mental health resources. We know most institutes and universities offer at some kind of counselling nowadays, but apparently they do not spread the word. Preventive measures, like our course system, are very rarely offered. We often get told: there is no budget for that😖 yet we clearly see it’s very much needed! Let’s change this: Ask what kind of mental health resources your institutes or universities offer. Ask for more awareness and more preventive measures!
Did you know that our network conducted a big survey among doctoral researchers (DRs) in 2021 in collaboration with Helmholtz Juniors and Max Planck PhD Net? The survey report is out now! Check it out to get an impression of what pursuing a PhD in the Leibniz Association is like: https://lnkd.in/eDJMMRFt . A blog post about it is also available on our website: https://lnkd.in/eQEzWzhn

During this year's Southwest conference, SXSW 24, in Austin, TX, I had an excellent opportunity to meet with the National Science Foundation (NSF). This organization funds all research projects across United States universities with an annual budget of USD 8.9 billion. During my meeting with the NSF on future research funding areas, several key points I have got to know where NSF invests are: Emphasis on interdisciplinary research Innovation and creativity Focus on societal impact and the Importance of diversity and inclusion Focus on future technologies like Harnessing the Data Revolution Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier Supports collaborative research on sustainable semiconductor-based systems. NSF funds projects across all sizes and Universities based on merit and scope of their vision. We have SERB in India that funds research up to 50 lakhs per project, but Science researchers in India have enough funding but lack reliable fund flow. Governments should enable a consistent funding source for small-scale researchers to foster future research across small universities and remote towns. The sad state is that most of the academic institutions are unaware of many funding sources that are available to them

🏅Exciting Announcement! Thrilled to share that I've been honored with the ETH Medal for my doctoral thesis! 🎓 I extend my gratitude to my supervisor, Metin Sitti, and committee members Juerg Leuthold and Wei Gao for their invaluable support. I'm also thankful to colleagues and friends—Yunus Alapan, Amirreza Aghakhani, Hakancan Ozturk, Birgül Akolpoglu and Patricia Martinez—for their contributions. The doctoral thesis was prepared at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in collaboration with ETH Zürich. My thesis involves the development of a magnetic microrobotic system—magnetic surface microrollers—and explores their potential for navigation in blood vessels. Practitioner-researcher in Public Engagement and Culture Change with a focus on policy and strategy: institutional, national, and international.
Have you ever been subject to science hostility? Research shows you are more likely to have been exposed to hostility than not, especially online. Astonishingly, for many, the attacks came from inside academia as often as outside. If you are in Germany and would like to understand how you can preferably avoid, but if not, how to deal with science hostility, consider signing up for our summer school on resilience to science hostility. Details in the linked post. See you there!
Call for Applications: Summer School on Resilience to Science Hostility The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), the Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science (BSOPE), and Scicomm-Support invite you to apply for a two-day training program aimed at early career researchers from all disciplines in #Berlin. Learn how to avoid or deal with hostility and hate speech attacks, where to find help, and most importantly how to create your own communication and engagement strategy in order to maximize your impact beyond academia. We offer PhDs, PostDocs, and researchers essential skills to communicate research effectively and engage with non-academic audiences while avoiding or handling hostile reactions. Application deadline: 5 August 2024. Apply now 👉 https://lnkd.in/gEsGVUbB This summer school is part of the multidisciplinary KAPAZ project, where we provide research on the spread and implication of hostility towards science in Germany. It is coordinated by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society and includes the Deutsches Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung GmbH (DZHW), Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD), the Bundesverband Hochschulkommunikation e.V., the Leibniz-Institut für Medienforschung | Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI) as well as the Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and the Freie Universität Berlin as cooperation partners. The KAPAZ project network is funded by the VolkswagenStiftung as part of the "Impulses for the Science System" funding programme.

An important article by Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences! The title is ''Keeping America “Science Strong”. She emphasizes several key suggestions for leadership in science: 1. Improve K-12 Education 2. Reduce Red Tape 3. Create a National Research Strategy 4. Modernize University–Industry Partnerships 5. Ensure Access to Major Research Facilities 6. Build Public Support for Science Some statements from the article on international students/researchers & collaborations: ''While US colleges and universities are still world class, a large fraction of graduate students (more than 1 in 3) and postdocs (more than half) in science, engineering, and medicine are international students...'' ''Even at the bachelor’s degree level, a full one-fifth of the S&E workforce in America is foreign-born ...'' ''Fifty years ago, it was possible for an individual university to host a major research facility, such as a particle accelerator or a telescope. Today, the frontiers of science have been advanced so far beyond what they were then that it takes an entire nation, or more likely, many nations working together to build, maintain, and get maximum benefit from a major science facility...'' https://lnkd.in/etKXgXD4
