2 years ago, I took a leap and switched from the world of photonics to the energy sector at SSE. It was daunting! But here's the thing: the skills I learned in photonics, even the failures, have proven to be incredibly valuable in this new, complex environment.
-----
I had previously been told by others that had jumped industries that you never know what others will appreciate you for but that a fresh perspective was generally welcomed. That always felt so generic and wishy washy...
Even during my time in academia we were told of the "transferable skills" we supposedly had. To be honest back then it was so hard to see & believe that what we were doing and how we were doing it could actually be useful somewhere else - surely everyone else must be doing things properly, right?
While many of my "discoveries" are still just sitting in the depths of some reports or journals, the way we were working is more relevant than ever!
More and more work these days is not just complicated but complex - meaning we may have an idea of what we are trying to achieve, but have to accept that we don't know everything on how we're going to get there.
Thus, we have to continuously work and experiment to learn & decide what the next sensible step could be.
This is pretty exactly how we were working in the photonics labs back then! We also had to accept that our experiments would fail pretty much most of the time until eventually, for one fleeting moment, everything came together and we got those longed for results to submit a paper/conference abstract etc. - I now know that this made me incredibly resilient, almost expecting that whatever I embark on will fail initially.
So, this career change has shown me the immense value of transferable skills and the importance of embracing the unknown. It's a journey of continuous learning and I'm excited to see where it will lead to!
To all my friends and colleagues in photonics, keep innovating! We'll do our best to keep the lights on in the meantime ;) - If you ever want to chat about the world beyond photonics, give me a shout.
Embrace the unknown, hone transferable skills, and keep learning - that's the key to thriving in today's ever-changing world! #careerswitch #transferableskills #photonics #energy #learning
