Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay will be celebrating our inaugural 3DE graduates from four Tampa Bay area high schools next spring. These students are ready for their post-secondary experience either entering the workforce, military or college! In a few short years, we will more than double our graduates with a total of nine public high schools infused with the 3DE instructional model. Our 2022–2023 3DE school year report confirms how effective the 3DE instructional model compared to the traditional high school experience. The findings below make 3DE a must-have for all Tampa Bay area high school students. Together, we will increase student engagement, accelerate academic growth, and expand opportunity. Dennis McCoy The Solution: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Some of the most heartening statistics come from our nation’s HBCUs. Though HBCUs make up only three percent of the country’s colleges and universities, they enroll 10% of all African American students and produce almost 20% of all African American graduates. These students have an advantage long past graduation. A whopping 25% of African American graduates with STEM degrees come from HBCUs. Eight HBCUs were among the top 20 institutions to award the most science and engineering bachelor’s degrees to Black graduates from 2008-2012. An HBCU graduate can expect to earn an additional $927,000 in their lifetime, which is 56% more than they could expect to earn without their HBCU degrees or certificates. From start to finish, an HBCU education is a setup for success.

Although HBCUs have been around since the 1830s, they have received newfound interest in the past few years thanks to HBCU alum Kamala Harris’ election to vice president of the United States. You can find 99 HBCUs across 19 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. (Source: NCES) Cheyney University of Pennsylvania became the first HBCU when it was founded in 1837. Of all degrees awarded by HBCUs, nearly 75% go to Black students, but HBCUs accept students of any race or ethnicity. (Source: NCES) HBCUs represent a small percentage of America’s higher education landscape, they graduate nearly 50% of Black teachers, 70% of Black doctors and dentists, and 80% of Black lawyers. (Source: U.S. Department of Education) One-third of HBCUs received their largest donations to date after the [murder] of George Floyd in 2020. February is #BlackHistoryMonth and while me and the rest of the #LevelUp crew celebrate and lift up #BlackStudentSuccess every day of the year, we're going to be extra loud this whole month about why Black students need your support. Thank you to the American Association of Community Colleges for sharing these data -- we can talk all day about what we see and know is happening in our institutions and are met with indifference. Yet when we share the numbers, that moves individuals a little more. Data. Don't. Lie. From Community College Daily: "Black student enrollment at community colleges offering bachelor’s degrees is seeing slower growth than students of other races, according to analysis of federal data by Level UP, a nationwide network of CEOs, community college executives, and state and federal officials focused on improving Black students’ enrollment and completion in postsecondary programs." I support community college bachelor degree programs, my question is how do we get more Black students to enroll in them? Please share this with your networks. The Campaign for College Opportunity is once again honoring Citrus College for its efforts to improve degree completion and advance racial equity for Black and Latinx students. Citrus College has been named a 2023 Champion of Higher Education, which recognizes the campus' exemplary work in implementing the associate degree for transfer (ADT). Citrus College will be recognized as a "Top Performer" in these categories: • Champion of Higher Education – ADT Awarded as a Percentage of all Associate Degrees Awarded, reflecting the percentage of total associate degrees awarded that were ADTs in the 2021-2022 academic year. • Equity Champion for Black Students, supporting at least 65% of Black associate-degree earners on campus to earn an ADT, as well as supporting these students to perform as well or better in this metric compared to the student body. • Equity Champion for Latinx Students, supporting at least 65% of Latinx associate-degree earners on campus to earn an ADT, as well as supporting these students to perform as well or better in this metric compared to the student body.
