Creating a board of directors in a startup's early days is critical, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all process. Initially, key investors and founders typically form the foundation, bringing financial backing and a core vision. However, as the company evolves and moves toward the next raise, it’s important to reassess and look for new board members who can add unique value. At this stage, it may be time for some early investors to step back, making room for seasoned executives who have experience in your industry. These new board members should bring insights and knowledge that the current team lacks. While investors often want to hold onto their seats, a strategic reshuffle can infuse the board with fresh energy and new perspectives. The key is to find people who can challenge you positively, ensuring that board meetings focus on the tough, important issues. Here are a few tips: - Odd numbers are often best to avoid deadlocks when votes are needed. - No yes-men. The best board members are those who challenge you and ask the tough questions. - Industry expertise is essential. Look for people who have “been there, done that” in your space and who can see around corners that you might not even know exist. Capital Magazin 40 Under 40! 🏆 Like many of you, I’m deep in Q4 founder mode—pushing deals, projects, hires, and partnerships across the finish line while trying to stretch the same 24 hours we all get. So I truly appreciate you taking a moment to read this. Being named to this year’s Capital Magazin 40 Under 40 is a huge honor. It’s not just recognition—it’s been one of the many goals I wrote on my bucket list at age 17, right before starting my first business. Since then, I’ve been building non-stop, from fresh coconut subscriptions to tools for configuring tombstones (yes, really!) to rating vegan hotels. To me, opportunities have always been everywhere, and I’ve always chased them. At 22, I co-founded Usercentrics and poured all my energy into it, going through a steep and humbling learning curve, and building my foundational entrepreneurial principles. With LionCorn Capital I could switch sides and continue to invest in great companies, being humbled and inspired even more by accompanying all these great founders from the inside. Now, at 29, I feel like I’ve “arrived” in many ways. Fides is where my heart truly lies. I know Corporate Governance doesn’t sound exciting to most, but for me, it’s about something deeper: transparency, trust, and safeguarding leaders, boards, and shareholders. It’s about making things smooth for the people who bear big responsibilities. At Fides, we’re building the tool I wish I had for myself. And while we’re still just getting started, I am super excited for what’s ahead and what news we'll launch in Q1! Interestingly, as Fides grows, or rather I grow with Fides, my need for external validation has diminished, because I’ve found peace in my own validation and maybe the validation of our customers 😃😇 Still, it’s nice to take a moment and reflect on what one has achieved to deserve to land on such a list. “Values Investor” – a cartoon that illustrates the best way to engage with Family Offices when looking for capital. According to Deloitte Private, Single Family offices, defined by the in-house investment and service firms of families typically worth $100M or more, are expected to top $5.4 trillion in assets by 2030, projecting them to have more assets than hedge funds. This class of capital is important for the technology industry, with PwC noting that almost one-third of the total capital invested in startups worldwide comes from family offices and Kauffman Fellows reported that family offices take a “large role as limited partners (LPs) in first-time, emerging fund managers. Finding these investors is often half the problem as they rarely come to conferences and tend to not be active on social media. Also, the engagement should be nurtured over time and map to the family office’s values. As Mr Family Office, a newsletter to 3,500 family offices said, “be patient. Don’t push for a quick win. Focus on building a genuine relationship, and the rewards will follow.” Also, many family offices were set-up with a set of values or a philanthropic purpose, which requires researching prior to any pitch. Ronald Diamond, founder of Diamond Wealth, said that the upside of receiving investment from Family Offices is that “they are not incentivized to flip companies as quickly as venture capital firms, offering greater alignment between founders and capital.” #siliconvalley #capital #iantoons
