Please join us in welcoming our newest member We Want Life (WWL). WWL was founded by Esraa, a cancer patient advocate who has worked with thousands of patients since 2011. She gained in-depth experience in five years and learned valuable insights that led to the establishment of WWL. Patients have something to say, patients have useful input for the policy makers. Patients need guidance to say their insights in a useful way. Patients are the end users of the health care system. Patients need a chair at the table where decisions are made. Patients need training and inspiration to be able to earn the chair. Patients need this chair because they need life to be more precious, they need a quality life, so it is time to start our patient advocacy group, because we all want a life! Sarcomas are rare cancers in connective tissues such as fat, blood vessels, and nerves. Sarcoma Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about this disease and its impact. Advocates in Seattle established Sarcoma Awareness Month in November 2007 with support from sarctrials.org. Sarcoma sees 15,000 new cases each year, and those fighting this disease need support to cope with the challenges. I have a special place in my heart for the elderly population. I feel we need to do more to interact engage and LISTEN there is so much to learn! The building blocks of project HEAL is to do just.. HEAL through the trauma and ACTIVE listening. There so much I’ve learned folks since my Fathers diagnosis (he is my HERO) that I sincerely have a new awakening and mission in life to help as many people as can through Advocacy. We first have to recognize the importance of healing ❤️🩹 before we can begin the work. Diversity in clinical trials starts with diversity in perspective. 🙏🏻Reflecting on Gratitude and Healthcare Access in Houston🙏🏻 As a Houstonian, I'm incredibly grateful for the world-class cancer prevention and treatment options available in our city. The Texas Medical Center is a beacon of hope for so many, offering cutting-edge research and top-notch care. But this gratitude comes with a sobering realization: not everyone has equal access to these life-saving resources. Many in our community and beyond face significant barriers due to financial constraints or lack of proper insurance coverage or transportation. We must do better. Here's how we can start: 📍Support local initiatives that provide free cancer screenings and education programs. 📍Advocate for policies that expand healthcare access and affordability. 📍KNOW your state representative and VOTE! 📍Volunteer at or donate to organizations that assist cancer patients with transportation, lodging, and other support services. Remember, prevention is always preferable to cure. I’m here to walk the talk! Let's work together to ensure everyone has the knowledge and resources to prioritize their health through regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle choices, and early detection screenings. My top advocacy takeaways from today: 1) Speak from your heart 2) Connect as humans 3) Trust you’re ready It’s so easy to overthink the details… the data… the acts and bills and needs for which we are advocating and want to get “right.” But while all of that helps, the most powerful moments today weren’t about exact details of the cancer survivorship acts we championed. They were about the power of story, the connection that happens when one human shares a personal story and another says “I hear you.” Grateful to have shared today with 4 fellow advocates from NY - with meetings in the offices of both our senators and 4 of our house reps - as advocates from many other states did the same. Thank you National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship for organizing a truly incredible day. More photos and reflections soon.
