When is a nut not a nut? When it's a peanut, groundnut, or monkey-nut. Today's headline news is about some success with trials of oral-immunotherapy for allergens in children. Specifically with milk and PEANUTS. The subheading says, 'Patients safely build up nut and milk tolerance'. Peanuts and tree nuts are totally different, not botanically related, and, as such, are a different allergen. Peanuts are a legume, a bean, related to peas, soya (edamame), haricots, etc., they are NOT a NUT. Nuts, for the purposes of allergen identification in the UK and EU are as follows: Almond, Brazil nut, Cashew, Hazelnut, Macadamia, Pecan, Pistachio, and Walnut. There is still a long way to go with treatment for allergies, especially when even the allergist consultant at the hospital did not know this difference.
