Building a strong connection with your leadership, and colleagues is key, especially in sales.
In my first week in the new job, one of my main tasks was to get to know everyone on the team, from my manager and colleagues to the account executive.
I needed to figure out how they work, what their roles entail, how they’re assessed in their roles, and what they expect from me beyond just hitting my KPIs.
Most importantly It was also about understanding who they are as a person.
One of the best tips I got from one of my senior colleagues was about how crucial it is to be on the same wavelength and have a clear, easy way of communicating.
They even shared a story showing what can go wrong when that doesn’t happen, and how it can mess up relationships and reputations.
Working well with your team can make a huge difference, even when the competition is fierce.
Hope you all have an awesome week ahead!
Is competition inter-company or group a good thing? Does having a competition between the sales force, different divisions, branches, etc each month with a prize for the best one improve performance?
Some years ago when I was running a building product distribution branch we had a monthly competition and a leaderboard for a top prize for the year. It was a thing of pride and status rather than having the cash prize each month, which as a frequent winner we saved up and we all had great evenings out together. In this way, everyone in the branch shared the success.
When rewarding the best performance of a salesperson each month does that encourage competition at the cost of teamwork?
2023 was a banner year for my exec TL team at Real Chem and for me professionally.
So in true Lauren style, a revised 🎄12 Days of Christmas 🎄 and a throwback photo.

Had a really interesting conversation with a very senior director who gave me a cool take on taking up board positions. Mahi and whaanau fill up my plate and I don't have a lot more capacity at the minute, or more specifically time I am willing to give up outside of important (to me) kaupapa.
His message was clear and simple:
1. Value your time, if you have to sacrifice the time for the most important things in your life to be on a board you probably shouldn't do it
2. Unless you are passionate about the kaupapa of the board or there is a person/people you could really learn from it probably isn't the position for you.
3. If it is a voluntary role, double down on the above two points
I'm curios to hear from people like me either at a owner in a business or at exec level, how important are director roles to you at this stage of your career?
My sentiments exactly and the points stated are what I consider against my why, factoring in my own Hauora and the outcomes I'm wanting to achieve both Career wise and in my life outside of mahi.
I always want to do more, not only as a Public servant (in a Work context) also involved in different Māori and Rainbow (LGBTQIA++) kaupapa (personally).
