Yesterday I attended a public hearing at the European Parliament on #R&I and the future #FP10, hosted by MEP Lina Gálvez and facilitated by Zabala Innovation Europe. My key takeaways: ➡️ I could not agree more with Lina Gálvez that “Talent is equally spread, but opportunities are not”. ➡️ Part of EU support to R&I is about cutting edge science and technology, which was ably represented by CESAER President Orla Feely, while part of is about collaboration between industry and other innovation actors including universities, which was demonstrated by Eduardo Beltrán de Nanclares. Both are vital for Europe's #competitiveness. ➡️ As Mikel Landabaso clearly argued, the two are connected but innovation does not always emerge from science in a linear process – a consideration shaping the Parliament’s pilot action on #transformingterritories with EU Science, Research and Innovation. ➡️ While top scientists should come together to make Europe a leading technological player on a global scale, this should not crowd out the seeds of innovation in regional innovation ecosystems that will not be fertilized without central support from the European Union (including FP10 closely aligned with regional funds). ➡️ Lidia Borrell-Damian made a very good point that terminology matters, and #widening should be renamed as #integrating. Involving the whole of Europe is vital for our common challenges and cohesion. “Past Forward” is the 2025 theme for the Science in the City (SitC) festival, which mixes science, arts, and history, where you can explore how research and innovations from the past have shaped the world we know today – and how they can help us create a better future. The main event will happen on 26 and 27 September 2025, two days packed with hands-on activities, workshops, exhibitions, arts installations, performances, and discussions that will bring the past and future together in unexpected ways. Nostalgia often gets a bad rap. People often say it holds us back from moving forward. But we think that’s totally unfair. At SitC, we believe there’s a lot to learn from the past – both the wins and the mistakes – and that these lessons can help us build a better future. The “Past Forward” theme is all about using what we know to inspire, boost creativity, and connect with others. Plus, studies have shown that nostalgia actually boosts mental health and encourages people to be more connected and kind. So, nostalgia isn’t about escaping the present – it’s about using the past to make the future even better. The “Past Forward” mindset is all about how our past, creativity, and innovation are connected. It’s about understanding how what we’ve learned from history still impacts what we do today and how it can spark new ideas for tomorrow. By diving into past breakthroughs in science and culture, we can get a glimpse into how discoveries happen and how these lessons can push us toward a more inclusive, sustainable and innovative future. Let’s not forget about Malta, home to UNESCO World Heritage sites and the historic city of Valletta, offering a unique glimpse into the island’s rich cultural history. Researchers based in Malta have been working hard on ground-breaking projects, using their expertise to contribute to scientific innovation and to preserve and enhance the country’s cultural and environmental heritage. Through events like the 2025 SitC festival, Malta will show how the past isn’t just history – it’s something that can inspire the next big thing.
