Have you heard of HACs? Hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) are no laughing matter. They threaten patients’ well-being while draining valuable hospital resources. Hospitals face many financial challenges with costs continuing to increase. They can also suffer a financial penalty based on their performance on measures of HACs. These penalties are imposed under the HAC Reduction Program, which cuts Medicare payments under certain parameters and aims to improve patient safety. BECKER'S COMPILES LIST OF HOSPITALS PATIENTS ARE MOST LIKELY TO RECOMMEND USING CMS DATA: Becker's has compiled a list of the hospitals patients are most likely to recommend in every state using Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems data from CMS. CMS shares 10 HCAHPS star ratings based on publicly reported HCAHPS measures. The recommended hospital star rating is based on patients' responses to the question, "Would you recommend this hospital to your friends and family?" Hospitals must have at least 100 completed HCAHPS surveys in a four-quarter period to be eligible for a star rating. Learn more about the methodology here. The star rating is based on survey data collected from hospital patients from October 2022 through September 2023. The figures are from CMS' Provider Data Catalog and were released July 31. Based on the findings, value-based care (VBC) facilitates a more team-based approach to whole-patient care, with PCPs empowered by multidisciplinary teams to ensure patients receive high-quality, holistic care. In 2022, 85% of patients in value-based arrangements saw their primary care provider (PCP) at least once, whereas 75% of those not in VBC arrangements saw their PCP at least once. Regarding preventive care, value-based arrangements saw a 14.6% higher rate of completed preventive screenings compared with MA members who were not in value-based arrangements. Patients treated in VBC arrangements also saw 30.1% fewer in-patient admissions compared with Original Medicare beneficiaries.

A hugely significant change in US #patientsafety infrastructure One of the new measures published in 2023 was a proposed Patent Safety Structural Measure. This is an attestation-based measure that assesses whether hospitals demonstrate having a structure and culture that prioritises patient safety. The Patient Safety Structural Measure includes five domains, each containing multiple statements that aim to capture the most salient structural and cultural elements of patient safety.
Last month the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published their 2023 Measures Under Consideration list, which included a new Patient Safety Structural Measure (https://lnkd.in/eHgr99Jj). When we approach #healthcare from a business perspective, #quality of #care suffers. In this study, the authors looked at over 650,000 admissions in 50+ facilities acquired by private equity firms and concluded that the implementation of cost cutting measures to prioritise the #ROI 🔜 25% 📈 in #ADRs 👉 27% ⤴️ in #falls 👉 38% ⤴️ in #CLABSIs (central line infections, whilst the number of central lines placed ↘️) 👉 50% ⤴️ in surgical site #infections (though surgical volume ⬇️ 16%) ⚠️ The real issue is that these are prime examples of avoidable instances that should never occur if clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are being implemented. That is why they are referred to as #neverevents. Though the researchers focus on #hospitals, it affects #healthcare in general. I am not oblivious to the fact that healthcare is a business, and that increasing capital is a priority, and thus, job-cutting measures are deemed necessary. The powers-to-be should have enough #foresight to realise that without bedside staff, the balance sheet will not look good for long. Unless, of course, the ultimate motivation is profit 💲💲💲💲 at the expense of #qualitycare.

I believe these hospital-at-home programs, like the one at Hackensack Medical Center, aren’t just innovative—they’re transformative. I’ve seen firsthand how much more effective care at home can be. I know because I’ve spent months in hospitals after being hit by a drowsy driver while cycling. When I finally made it home, I had to manage PICC lines, wounds, and daily heparin shots. It wasn’t easy, but nothing beats being home. No one wants to be in a hospital if they don’t have to be, and no one should when better options exist. I’ve also seen this with my family. One relative went to a skilled nursing facility after a health scare, and it just didn’t work—no progress, no comfort. Another family member came home after the hospital team adjusted his meds and provided the right support, and now he’s thriving. This is the kind of care we should aim for—where people heal where they feel safest. Hospital-at-home programs, which expanded during COVID-19, are poised for rapid growth. New Jersey hospitals are adopting this model, and with a new law in place, private insurers are now required to cover this kind of care. It’s a win-win: patients heal faster at home, avoiding the stress and risk of hospital infections, while hospitals can focus resources on those who truly need critical care. For me, this is personal. I believe this shift will change healthcare for the better. The outcomes speak for themselves, and the emotional comfort of being home—surrounded by family—makes all the difference. As someone who’s spent too much time in hospitals, I can say without a doubt that home is where real recovery happens.

Since January, hospitals have been required to include a “Price Transparency” link in the footer of their website homepage. This link should guide users to a public webpage that hosts their Machine-Readable Files (MRFs), a single digital file that contains standard hospital charge information. CMS has introduced significant changes to the requirements for hospital price transparency, aimed to enhance transparency and ensure compliance with the rules.
